Deserves ten stars! An icon of east London, the events here range from fundraisers, cinema, markets, cabaret and stand up - the Rio does it all. If you haven’t been here yet, you’re missing out. Always a good range of food and drink and accesible. Love the ice cream range.
The Rio is my local cinema and it is an absolute gem! It reflects all the joy, diversity, history and community that is Hackney. The staff are fantastic, the movies are invariably a great mix of mainstream and independent/ art house. The main auditorium retains many of the original features which date back 100+ years. It also has a cute smaller screen downstairs and two funky bars. The Rio deserves our love and support!
I live right by this cinema and on several occasions have peered my head in to try to see what films are on and chat to a friendly face. Every single time I’ve been absconded by a grumpy security person at the door who’s demanded I show a ticket to enter. This is happened with two different security people. I really don’t understand the logic here - I haven’t got a ticket because you won’t let me even go in and see what’s showing! CrazynnPrince Charles in Soho is way better
very sweet staff, watched the euros in the basement in a cozy set up and a small bar to get drinks. would definitely visit again and support an independent cinema
This is a jewel in Hackney: Beautiful art deco building with a cozy screening room that shows independent films. Very friendly staff too. This is an absolute must go if you’re in Hackney. Long life to Rio!
