The Rio Cinema in Dalston is a charming old movie theatre with a wonderful old-school atmosphere that reflects the history of the area. The location is perfect and easy to get to.The main auditorium has retained many original features, giving it a unique and nostalgic vibe.nnThe staff were friendly, and the movie selection is an excellent mix of mainstream and independent films. I saw a great independent film during my visit, and the seats were comfortable. The popcorn and drinks are reasonably priced. The toilets were clean but a bit small and need renovation.nnWhile it’s a lovely experience overall, there’s room for some modern updates to enhance the comfort. That said, the Rio is a gem for movie lovers and well worth a visit!
They have a cute vhs wall which hits right in the nostalgia! Staff were friendly and it’s a fairly comfortable place that feels more diy and playful than anything else. Also some great films and events in here as well.nnA shame they have a security guard checking bags, surely it costs them more to pay someone I’m assuming more than minimum wage based on their ethics then it does in some tiny amount of lost revenue to people potentially bringing outside food in, which people can still very easily do anyway.nnWhy not just get one of your regular staff SIA trained? Costs about £100 and then that staff is multi purpose and more friendly.
Great old school movie theater. Interesting art deco interior. Would be interesting to experience the balcony seating.nnLiked the snack bar. Grab an espresso before the film!
Great selection of films , but one could have imagined that when you go to the cinema, the theatre is completely dark. The two gigantic signs of Women and Men Toilet, lit in blue to the side of the screen disturb the view. Ironically they are gender neutral toilet s, which is great still have urinals tho .
Like other reviewers have said, the security guard by the door is extremely unwelcoming and has an unfriendly demeanor, which completely ruins the vibe of such a quirky cinema. I’m not opposed to bag checks, but there’s definitely a more hospitable way of doing it than body blocking people when they walk in the door. The seats in screen 1 are in need of repair/redo as a lot of them are slanted downward which makes sitting through a 2+ hr film uncomfortable. The sound system also needs updating as it sounds like a louder version of a computer speaker, with not much depth. For their Tuesday concession ticket, the experience is alright. But if I’m paying full price, I’d be seething with regret.
