I like old pubs, and I like good ale. Combine a selection of local ales with an interior that is like a film set from 100 years ago, not because someone cleverly concocted it, but because it has actually survived, and you have somewhere special. Add in a clientelle that spans a whole range of society: town and gown, old and young, neighbours resting their shopping bags and tourists speaking foreign tongues, and you pretty much have the perfect pub. If it all becomes too much, the Victoria is also a B&B: comfortable rooms and a great breakfast.

one of the best places for beer, pickled eggs and pork chips... there is a high chance to find a physicist around

It's fine. Quite cozy (verging on cramped at busy times) with its 3 separate bar rooms, and the selection of ales and hard liquor is pretty decent. It certainly has a unique feel, and is very 'local', so first time visitors might feel slightly out-of-place at first, but it's not in any way 'rough'. Give it time, go there when it isn't packed and it's a perfect place to sit and read a book next to an open fire while enjoying a decent pint.

Loved it! Classic old pub and inn. Both are small but the rooms are very nice and situated only a short walk from Durham Cathedral and University. A really nice full English breakfast is included. Must consider the 25 -35 steps required to reach rooms.

A beautiful historic pub in the heart of Durham. Serving good beer with incredibly friendly staff. I could easily recommend it to anyone in the city.
