Lovely hotel in a fantasy location. My room was good and well suited for my business trip, however; the TV didn't have a signal and the upright fab was intermittently working. The room was clean and tidy and the bed very comfortable with a stable and fast internet connection. I will definitely stay here when I'm next in Southampton. There is limited car parking at the hotel in a first come, first served basis - this is and extra £6 per night. The dining area was clean and spacious, the breakfast was very good for the £8.95 charge. Overall I wouldn't hesitate to recommend The Start hotel.
Location and staff were great, parking onsite at £6 for the day is fantastic. Rooms were a bit of a let down, finding a previous occupants unopened box of condoms was.....Nice?! Unfortunately noise from outside the room and the fact the curtains are thin and don't keep out the light made for a restless nights sleep. Finally the room was so so hot, so also had to sleep with the window open which didn't help with blocking out noise.
Brilliant service from the start, rooms are a little run down and the halls smelled like smoke. Toilet waste lose but repaired straight away. Average hotel at a decent price I would stay againRooms: 3/5
Very convenient and close to the Red Funnel ferry terminal. Very comfortable bed and the en-suite facilities were clean and warm. Only downside is that if you get a room on the front it’s a bit noisy, the windows could do with being double glazed. Worth it thoughRooms: 5/5
I would strongly recommend you do not stay here if you value sleep. If all you're looking for is a cheap bed with the intent of going out in Southampton and returning in a drink induced coma like state you'll probably be fine. However, anyone wishing to sleep in a comfortable environment will be disappointed with the loud noise of revellers until the early hours subsequently followed by the banging of early morning delivery lorries. The room is extremely hot which means you'll need the window open which further exacerbates the noise issue. We managed to sleep by using our earphones to play music and block out the noise. The room we stayed in was a grey square in terms of decor and was fairly depressing all round. Credit where credits due...though rusty to look at, the shower was powerful and hot. We won't be staying again.
You could be put off by outside appearance but inside the hotel is clean and tidy and the staff were more than obliging. Private car park at the rear which is great as hotel is really central for the shopping area. No complaints about the room either. Clean and comfortable with lovely shower.Rooms: 4/5
The location is fantastic, right in the centre with everything on the doorstep. Check in was great and the staff are really helpful. The room though was a real disappointment. The hotel is well overdue a total renovation. Everything looks as if it is botched together to just make do. I would never stay here again or recommend it to anyone.
Me and my wife stayed there for 2 nights and had a great experience. The staff were very friendly and we got booked in very quickly with all the important information given and any charges for the room explained. We did pay a £25 security deposit that was paid back 2hrs after booking out the room, which was subject to room inspection after leaving. The room was very nice and cosy with all the facilities needed, lots of storage and a small bathroom with a shower and toilet. Very nice bar and dining room with lots of period features as the building is well over 200 years old. Breakfast was very nice both mornings with a choice of full English breakfast and a continental as well with a choice of coffee and tea which was bought to your table with your toast. As the building is grade 2 listed there is no lift so there is alot of stairs to climb up which would it unsuitable for wheelchair users. Parking is provided for all guests in the hotel car park which is very safe. A very nice hotel to stay at. Rooms: Small and cosy with comfy bed and all the facilities needed with a small bathroom Nearby activities: Located centrally in Southampton its near all the bars/restaurants and has regular public transport nearby. Walkability: Lots of stairs but no lift so alot of walking to get to your rooms. Would not be suitable for wheelchair users. Food & drinks: Full English breakfast was very nice and self service with coffee, tea and your choice of toast bought to your table. Noteworthy details: Grade 2 listed and well over 200 years old so has lots of period features and very friendly staff that will always help.
Good location and comfy beds. Whilst it is not a modern hotel, and the owners have decided not necessarily to make the most of it, we found it comfortable and the staff friendly. We were in a family room up at the top of the hotel, which faced out the back, and so was relatively quiet so got a good night's sleep even on a Saturday night. The breakfast was very nice for the price. I wouldn't necessarily stay for more than two nights , but it served us perfectly
Great for a simple overnight stay with parking small charge, close to West Quay. Continental breakfast served. Friendly and welcoming Staff. Tea and coffee in room and TV.Rooms: 4/5
