Public areas are nice and staff were friendly, however, most of those encountered do not seem to understand how the hospitality industry works, with some health and safety issues regarding handling food/ice/drinks and over sharing of personal information. It would have been nice if we were asked how our stay was, or how we slept and a smile and good morning as we entered the breakfast room would have been welcomed. The room was dated, peeling paint on the radiators and window frames and bumpy carpet. The room was like a furnace with a squeaky fan that just moved hot air. It was cooler outside however I didn't want to leave my window open as the room was accessible to anyone due to the massive pile of bin bags and dirty laundry that was just below our window and i was travelling alone with my daughter and felt vulnerable. The bed was so comfortable which was a blessing as was awake most of the night. I definitely would not want to spend a night in room 16 again. My daughter was feeling unwell for most of the afternoon /evening so she was not up to a room move had we asked and there are no phones in the rooms to be able to contact reception. Great location, room toiletries were nice. A definite need to add air conditioning and decorate this room. Some work is required for this to be a 4*hotel.
This was a family weekend away and sadly didn't meet our expectations for a 4 star hotel. Totally disappointed especially after staying in the Mercure Exeter which was far superior. When we arrived in our rooms we couldn't believe what we were seeing, just terrible. Also the baby cot was covered in stains at one end and looked disgusting which we complained about and was changed when we moved rooms. So we headed back to reception, and the member of staff on reception was very helpful and polite. He changed our rooms to the so called 'Privilege Rooms'. Whilst these rooms were more of what we expected in respect of the size and price we paid, they were far from a 4 star hotel rating, and it certainly wasn't a privilege to stay in them. They were the 2 Bay windowed rooms at the front of the hotel, so you could hear all the noise from the main road traffic and the club/bar opposite until the early hours! There were many issues with the room and it wasn't overly clean. In one of our rooms the bed was being propped up by a piece of wood as it was collapsing in the middle. The carpet was stained and looked dirty and the curtains were all broken and didn't close properly! The female staff at breakfast were miserable and unhelpful and didn't greet us, just asked our room number and left to us to find a table and get our own baby high chair. No help offered at all. The breakfast items were not being replenished and none of the staff seemed to be bothered. I wouldn't recommend a stay here and will never return. More like a 1 or maybe 2 star hotel experience at best. Extremely disappointing lots of photos taken and can be shared if required.
Disgusting beyond disgusting. I review lots on Google and to be honest this place is so poor. I was completely flabbergasted by the incompetence of the staff the standards of the hotel and every aspect of my safe and lovely and very very expensive weekend with my children. 1. Rejected linen, on the bed 2. Privilege coffee machine covered in dust 3. Unit under fridge had a thick layer of grey dust 4. Double bed had a thick layer of dust underneath 5. Amenities in room had not been replenished, they were used and not replaced 6. Stains on all of the carpets 7. No sign of any vacuum being used in the room 8. Electric fan in room was not safe and stable. 9. Curtain by the side of the bathroom was full of dust and white particles 10. Body hair in the bathtub 11. Lamp shade broken 12. The corridor wall was covered in some form of dried liquid 13. The net curtain had the same 14. Cups in the room were not cleaned. 15. We had to move the mattress from the base of the bed to make a make-shift bed for my children and i to sleep on as there was no sofabed or extra bed in the room for which we paid. Horrific is a slight understatement.
This is possibly the worst excuse for a hotel I have ever been. I checked in on a Sunday afternoon for a week leaving on the Friday. On returning after a days work Monday evening I noticed my room had not been serviced. Not only that but someone had come into my and opened the window and left it open. Bearing in mind the window opens onto a publicly accessible path. Not very safe I'd say. The rooms are very run down and in need of a lot of work. In total for my whole weeks stay my room was not serviced once and I even had to go and request if it was possible that I could get some more toilet paper from reception as I had run out. Possibly the most embarrassing thing I've had to endure. I would not let my dog board there in all honesty. Here are some photos I took.
Arrived at 5pm, late as stuck in traffic, we had to call a number to get a staff member to reception. Did this and waited ages for someone to arrive. Was told that our room was still not ready. Seemed others were hanging around in the bar and had also been waiting for their room to be ready. Corridors were dirty and it had an old smell about it. Got to room and there was no bedding for the sofa bed for the kids and the window wouldn't close. Went down to ask for bedding and there was a queue at reception and no staff in sight. After about 10 minutes a few staff members walked passed reception but didn't come to help. Finally someone came and I complained about the bedding and she just said someone will bring some, no apology or anything, she didn't seem bothered. The room was very basic and hardly 4 star. As the window wouldn't close we could hear all the noise through the night from the people outside. Just wasn't the best experience for the price we paid. Also paying £5 to park in their own car park was a bit cheeky considering you've paid to stay there anyway.
I can understand that the hotel and rooms are set in an older building and things may be somewhat outdated but to completely disregard cleanliness in the rooms isn’t acceptable. First off , there were huge cobwebs in the corners of the window, a build up of mould on the ceiling and walls of the shower , stains on the walls and carpets, paint peeling off the radiator and walls, no grouting in the bathroom tiling and the horrible smell of paint throughout the hallway and room. I’m sure it could be a nice hotel if some real care went into the place rather than trying to put a new coat of paint on any problems, but at the moment I wouldn’t let my dog stay there.
Spotlessly clean, great location! The bathroom was also a big size plenty big enough. We noticed that there was no welcome pack within the room and because there was no phone if you wanted anything you had to travel to reception. We did unfortunately have two bad night's sleep due to the room being extremely hot! Even when we turned off the radiators and opened both windows it was like a sauna, we slept on top of the covers and needed the electric fan. Its April and chilly outside so it wasn't down to the weather. In addition breakfast was not included it was an additional £11 per day so we opted to go to a near by weatherspoons instead only two doors down. Parking was also charged at £5 per night. I enjoyed our stay and would consider staying again but maybe in another part of the hotel.
Really old and worn hotel in the old town Stayed here for 3 days, was supposed to stay there for 6 days but really had to change. The room was dusty and really worn, the bed felt like it should have been replaced 10 years ago. There were cracks in the walls, stains on the floor, and the carpet was really tired. TV was not working properly as well. No aircondition so the room is really hot as well. There was a strange bad smell in the room when when I arrived, and it did not smell clean I was on the 4th floor, and the noise from the bar on the other side kept up until 3 in the morning, even if you closed the worn out windows. So did not get a proper sleep. The bearings for the fan in the toilet were worn out and really noisy. The breakfast was not something to be proud of. I lost the appetite when I saw a big blow fly on the scrambled eggs. The WiFi is really good, and the parking lot, even though it is difficult to find in the start. The location of the hotel is really good. Service and cleaning of the room was non existing. Service of the staff was OK, and friendly, but it seemed like they had not been there for so many years. I should have read the reviews for the hotel before I stayed there. I can see there is a lot of poor reviews of the hotel, but it does not seem like there is any changes upcoming. I would recommend getting the carpets changed and get the beds replaced. Get the windows maintained or replace them. Clean the rooms and make sure they smell clean when customers arrive. If possible get aircondition installed. Ask customers if they are satisfied with their rooms and be more friendly and service minded.
Yes, the hotel itself is run down and needs an overhaul but our stay was just fine, onsite parking was simple and the breakfast was good. There was some confusion on my booking but props to Kelly on check in who sorted it with minimum fuss and added a free breakfast as an apology. Mercure - Kelly is a credit to your hotel, very professional and courteous and sorted something the guest experience manager couldn't.
No problems. Comfy beds. Food service for our large coach party handled well, nice head waiter and staff. Decor a bit dated but clean. Busy area, a bit noisy at night, but not unbearable.Rooms: 3/5
