Sanderson Hotel

About

A surreal Cocteau-like dream world epitomizing a "new luxury".

Story

A lavish "Urban Spa" in the heart of London’s West End, Sanderson Hotel offers a retreat from the bustle of the city into a world of fantasy and wellbeing. The landmarked 50s building has been transformed by Philippe Starck into a surreal Cocteau-like dream world, epitomizing a “new luxury” that is smart, pared down, and tempered with a healthy dose of wit and irony. With the absence of “normal” walls and a floor-to-ceiling glass facade that diffuses natural light through flowing layers of ethereal sheer curtains, Sanderson’s indoor/outdoor lobby is a layered and sophisticated environment that is totally original. Surrounding an extraordinary landmark Courtyard Garden designed by Philip Hicks, Starck’s visionary style mixes baroque and modern, juxtaposing Salvador Dali’s curvaceous red lips sofa with classic 60s mosaics and hand-carved African furniture with an oversized Louis XV armoire. The result blends wit, magic and surprise in an elegant balancing act of extravagance and pure simplicity.

Went for afternoon tea. It was great to look at but, for the price, you’d expect everything to taste fresh and amazing and it just missed the mark. Savouries were stale, sweets were pretty good. Service was touch and go and we had to request many things twice. Staff were pleasant and kind when they did serve us but it is frustrating to feel forgotten about and chase up requests for refills and the bill when there were so many staff around. We were very warm on the patio on a cold day and the venue was very trendy but won’t be back unfortunately.
We were on our way to a friend’s party when we stumbled upon the Sanderson Hotel. It had this incredible retro vibe from the 70s, and it was absolutely stunning! The service from Victoria was top-notch, and we’ll definitely be back for another cocktail experience.Service: 5/5
The Sanderson Hotel was everything we could’ve hoped for and more! One of the highlights of our stay was being welcomed by Elena, who made us feel so at home from the very start. She had such a warm and kind energy that instantly put us at ease. What really stood out were the little surprises she arranged for us—such thoughtful touches that made our visit feel so personal and memorable. It’s rare to come across someone who genuinely goes out of their way to make your experience special, but Elena absolutely did. We’ll definitely be back, and we can’t recommend the Sanderson enough—especially with staff like Elena making it such a standout place!
We stayed for 2 nights in September 2024. The room is spacious, clean, and neat. The bed and the pillows were comfortable. There's a safe, hairdryer, and a fridge in the room. There's also a pair of dumbbells with some instructions, which we thought was fun and neat! The only annoying thing was the curtains. It want only one pair of curtains as in any hotel room but multiple small windows I think 5 each with a shutter and a blackout curtain. So, every night we had to pull them down one by one. There's no iron in the room, but we asked for one from the reception. The staff were friendly and helpful when we asked them to extend our check out time and to store our luggage for some time. The gym is big and has multiple cardio and strength machines, as well as two sets of dumbbells with various weights. The breakfast is expensive compared to breakfast restaurants nearby. You either pay £26 for the cold buffet cheese platter, cold meats, yogurt, fruits, and cereal see the pics and video or pay £30 to get that + your choice of a hot dish eggs or pancakes. Nearby activities: Close to many shops. Walkability: Many restaurants and coffee shops around.
Great location. Minutes away by walk from London's center Oxford, Regent st. etc... Didn't get a 5 star vibe though...4 stars is more accurate. The building is pretty old. The doors make this horrible squeaky sound and the hallway has a horrible, old and dusty smell. We couldn't breathe from that smell until we entered our room. Luckily that smell was only in the hallway because if it was also in my room I'd switch it a thousand times. They should really do something about that hallway smell. We were on the 1st floor, don't know about the other floors. The bed is pretty small, if u share it with someone u don't have much moving space as you sleep. Plus, I had to request some basic things to be brought to my room as I checked in such as a vanity kit and shower cap, instead of them waiting for me in my room as I arrive. Very nice gym for sport lovers. Other than these maintenance issues, Sanderson is a really nice hotel. Kind staff, great location. Big, spacious and well designed rooms though the room looked better online , but I wouldn't rate it as 5 stars.
Nearly everything about my stay was pretty poor. I checked in around 11pm. The room was freezing. It turns out that it was switched on cool instead of heat end of Nov. It took them about 40 mins to fix. I asked for another duvet and they brought an uncovered one. There was no milk in the fridge. I tried ordering room service but they said it was not available even though in reception they said it would be available until 2am. Upon checking out the reception insisted I needed to pay for my room even though it was paid for. It took her some time to realise she made the mistake. Breakfast choice is like a 3 star hotel. Decoration is very outdated.
The review is for afternoon tea only, we haven't stayed at the hotel. We love to try afternoon teas around London and have experienced quite a few, and this was the most underwhelming one in terms of quality, service and value for money. We entered the hotel through the bar, where a whole bunch staff was standing and having a heated conversation. They noticed we came in but no one bothered to acknowledge us or help. A hostess showed up in 5 min and seated us. The service was slow, it took about 25 min before anything came to table. We had to chase everything couple of times and remind the waitresses. For various reasons, we only found one or two sandwich types edible. They sparingly give any seconds and that has to be chased too. We ended up paying more than 200 pounds for 2 adults and 2 kids. For that kind of money could have had a steak dinner. Or a decent afternoon tea somewhere else. Odd crowd visiting the hotel bar too, not a great vibe. Definitely would not recommend
My experience in London was deeply disappointing. Upon arrival, our room wasn’t ready despite a prior request through our travel agent. We were left with no choice but to pay extra for an upgrade. Despite clearing the minibar and having the required deposit, an additional charge was made to my card without my consent. The rooms are not soundproof at all, making it impossible to block out the noise from the road. Room service was extremely slow and didn’t cater to dietary needs, such as providing lactose-free milk. I’ve stayed in so many hotels in London, definitely not coming back to this one.
A real gem in the heart of London. Top quality rooms, exceptional food and friendly staff. If you want to be close to shopping, excellent eateries and modern and clean rooms then go no further than here.Rooms: 5/5
As loyal diamond member, I was impressed with the Very friendly receptionists and staff ; excellent location only around a 10 minute walk from Piccadilly and the all the shops. Although the room is awkwardly shaped with a broken plug and no doors separating the bathroom but it’s quite modern with high quality amenities. But when we redeemed our free drinks at the bar, an attendant I’m assuming a supervisor discriminated against us and belittled us which was rude and uncalled for. Because she assumed we wanted to check in inside the bar which wasn’t true.
