I had two nights here and it was absolutely okay. A typical hostel: beds not too comfortable, limited space, overall a bit dirty. But it’s central in Portree and has all amenities you’d expect probably. I didn’t see lockers though. For what you get a bit pricey in my opinion, but I guess compared to accommodation prices around in Portree you could consider it fair. I have been in better hostels, but for two nights it was totally fine.
Not a good experience for me I'm afraid. Stayed there for one night but they insist you pay for two - I asked for a receipt and was told by the receptionist that they couldn't provide one . Showers were cold and the outlet blocked. The whole place didn't seem to be very clean. The "drying room" had no heating. There is no secure bike storage. The proliferation of signage everywhere setting out rules and warnings including CCTV made the whole experience unwelcoming and I felt myself and my fellow travellers were being taken advantage of. A truly terrible representation of Scottish hospitality to show to the international travellers and I would avoid it at all costs. Awful.
Great location in the city centre, big and well equipped kitchen, clean bathrooms and... well, that's it for good things. Claustrophobic rooms with no storage space and bed curtains to isolate from other's blinding over-bed lights. How radiator worked was one big mystery - only between 7 PM to 6/7 AM, one night we fell asleep barely breathing ofc windows couldn't be opened to wake up freezing also because of the windows and the next night the radiator was warm, but in the room was still so cold, we slept in sweaters and hats there was 4 degrees at night ffs!. Staff was very nice at first just to kick us out of the room on 10:01 on check out day. Also someone from the staff left open backyard door in basement level bathroom while there were people taking shower! Do not recommend at all.
The staff was friendly and helpful, however, when I arrived I could either select a dorm for £25.00 or a private room for £70.00. I chose the pricate room as I was feeling a bit under the weather and did not want to cough all night in a dorm. The single room for which I paid £70.00 was similar to Harry Potter’s cupboard room in the first movie. It was not only very small but also very cold. Furthermore I hoped for a little peace and quite especially in the private room but I was located inbetween a group and they saw fit to shout around until midnight. The door did not cancel out any noises. Therefore I cannot recommend it as I have paid less for really good Bed&Breakfasts where I definitely got more for my money. Had to pay my stay in cash.
Pros: Location & checking out Cons: Unfriendly staff that speak very limited english, have to pay by cash for remainder of booking seems sus, no secure place for our luggage - even in the room, we stayed in a very crammed 12 bed basement dorm that had no airflow and limited daylight, the smell in the morning was unbearable, the kitchen stoves and oven are switched OFF at 2130! No real lounge/ commons area, the whole place was freezing in the evening, the bedding was stained and thin & mattress old, feels like sleeping on a spring We’ve stayed at much better hostels for cheaper than £30 pp per night!! Also, an eerie weird vibe. Stay at the hostel around the corner
I stayed with my family for a trip to Isle of Skye! It was a great location and very convenient to get into town. A few minutes walk from grocery stores and gift shops, there was also a parking lot across for overnight parking which is ideal. The hosts were friendly and very nice, they gave clear instructions and great recommendations around the town. The place was well maintained and very clean, however the rooms were in dormitory co-ed style! But it works out for our family so we could be in the same room!
This review is only for the laundry room, we did not stay here. The laundry facilities are available for use by the public, and I believe are the only laundry facilities available on the island! We buzzed into reception to change our money to coins and purchase detergent- the reception worker wasn’t super friendly but that wasn’t an issue as all we were doing was a quick transaction. The laundry room itself is located in the back on the ground floor. While it isn’t the cleanest, there’s a few washing machines and a few dryers that cost different amounts based on the amount of clothes you can wash at once. The machines we used worked perfectly and our clothes came out clean and dry. Walkability: Very close to the public car park, centrally located in downtown Portree
Unfortunately, we stayed here with Haggis Adventures and did not enjoy our stay. Giving two stars because it did what it promised - offered a cheap place to sleep. The other biggest pro is the location - right in the middle of town. However, the walls are slightly unnerving shades of neon, and clearly cover up wear and tear and mould that others mention in their review. The room we stayed in was in the basement, and was constantly damp, cold, and smelling of sweat. If you look closely, there is dust, dirt, and even toenails and various other human things being vague in corners and on walls, which is not unheard of in other hostels but we never noticed to the extent that it was at this hostel. The beds are quite hard, and on some you can feel the springs digging into you, and the metal bunks creak loud enough to wake you up. The bathrooms were fine, did the job. Same with the kitchen, although it took me a half hour to fry eggs on the highest element setting. Some free things provided such as salt, pepper, and things other guests left behind. If you’re looking for a cheap place to sleep in Portree and nothing else, it would be fine. But we dreaded going back each night, and breathed a sigh of relief when we left.
What's good: - Location, location, location! Right in the centre of town, 1 minute walk to the bus stop and Co-op, 4 minute walk to the harbour. Lots of cafés and takeaway places nearby. - Staff were friendly and helpful, even gave me an extra blanket because I was cold. - Small but effective drying room. - Spacious kitchen with everything you need. What wasn't so good: - It was really cold downstairs, even with heating on. I spent a lot of time in the upstairs kitchen to keep warm. - No soundproofing. Kitchen opens at 7am and if you're in one of the rooms below, you won't need an alarm. - Beds were creaky. Earplugs are a must-have, otherwise you wake up every time someone in the dorm moves. - Loo rolls kept disappearing and were only replaced at noon, so check before you go.
Unfriendly and unaccommodating staff, who hardly speak English. The entire hostel is old and not very well kept. There are 14 beds in a room in the basement, no lockers - so you don't feel safe at all. The doors to the rooms were constantly open, so you felt even more unsafe while sleeping - or trying to sleep more like. The linen had stains, the bedding itself is falling apart and needs replacing. No staff to keep the showers clean. In the early evening, a hand-towel was lying on the ground in the shower room and was still just lying there next morning. The whole place smelled damp. I didn't look close enough to spot the mold, but as others have mentioned it's probably there. Worst night ever!
