The Rosedale Hotel

About

A warm Highland welcome awaits you at The Rosedale Hotel, located on the harbour front in Portree with stunning views across the bay.

Story

The hotel is located on the harbour front at Portree with stunning views across the bay. Originally formed from 3 Fishermans Houses - now a unique hotel with many stairs, low beams and an abundance of character.

The main hotel is essentially three adjacent buildings, each with a staircase, but only linked at certain levels.

All 24 En Suite Bedrooms are individually decorated and the original stone walls mean that all rooms are different in size and character.

How this place is a three-star hotel is a mystery. Our room smells musty and a bit like wet dog. The toilet barely flushes. I get that. It's old but they could do better. They advertise that you can get breakfast with your room yet they don't have tables available. When we checked in we were given one time frame to eat and that was it. Our party was not even able to eat at the same time but an hour apart. We asked for a different time on our second night and we were told no. Parking is a nightmare. However, the view is stunning. It's the only thing that makes up for the mess that is this hotel.
Restaurant review: As we were aware of the limited parking in the area, we walked to the restaurant from our accommodation. It is an intimate restaurant with a beautiful view over looking the Harbour. It offers a limited menu but we each combined two entrees to create a main meal we were happy with. No draught beers on tap. Service was good.
Had high hopes, but they were quickly dashed at check in. Front of the house staff asked for my passport number as well as my additional travel plans and couldn't or wouldn't provide reasoning as to why that information was necessary or required for them to issue room keys. If you have a lot of bags we were on a two week trip parking is non-existent and as other reviewers have pointed out, there is no elevator. This is not a huge imposition and is expected for the location, but it's still important to know going in. We stayed at the property on a Tuesday and Wednesday - the restaurant and bar were closed both evenings. Breakfast was serviceable. Rooms were spacious, but smelled musty/felt dirty and the first floor of the hotel had recently flooded and the carpet had been pulled. Not especially kid friendly, especially given the front office staff we interacted with. Wouldn't stay there again. Location though, hard to beat. So, if that's all that's important to you - go for it.
Restaurant Review: The food was bland and not cheap. Would not recommend if there are other options. I had the seafood linguine and some of the fish tasted a bit off. My partner had the gnocchi which was tasted like gnocchi from a bag and sauce from a jar. View and drinks were good.
Hotel:nWas definitely not a 3 star hotel. Carpet was filthy. Hole in bathroom with brown bugs coming out of it. Did not feel clean due to filthy carpet.nnParking was a 10 minute walk uphill with stairs so not convenient. Front desk was not helpful with parking.nnView of harbor was nice. Only positive of hotelnnRestaurant: dinner - waited 30 minutes for someone to acknowledge us. Did not write order down- forgot husband’s beer, did not bring side salads. Charged us for 3 seafood chowders when only ordered 2. Extra bread ordered was so hard could not cut it or tear it. Food was sub par. Seafood chowder was mostly broth with little seafood. GNOCCHI had no flavor. No apologies for mistakes. Did not carennBreakfast: had to reserve a time. Showed up at our reserved time and still waited 20 minutes for coffee after I asked 3 times for coffee please. Food was ok but customer service was awful.nnWas surprised Rick Steves recommended this place in his book. It has definitely gone down hill since he visited.
