The hospital provides teaching and training for medical staff and gained university status in 1997. The Ladywell Unit on the premises is operated by the South London and Maudsley NHS Trust. The hospital site has undergone several major alterations in recent years. The most recent was the completion of a major new treatment wing, Riverside, which was officially opened by Archbishop Desmond Tutu in May 2007. This building reflects current thinking about patient care, replacing Nightingale Wards with multiple four-bedded bays. The design also reflects contemporary environmental concerns and was the first major NHS building to generate a proportion of its own power using photovoltaic panels installed on the roof.
