GROSS PROFITEERING AT EDGAR HOUSE!! We booked Edgar House for two nights over the weekend to celebrate a special birthday in February.   Unfortunately my father suddenly died a few days before we were due to travel so we promptly rang Edgar House to give our apologies and ask if we could postpone our visit for obvious reasons. They gave their condolences and said they would confirm the cancellation by email in due course. Subsequently we received an email from Mike saying if he could not re-let the room we would forfeit our deposit (£284).   On the Saturday evening we were due to arrive we telephoned Edgar House to check if they had any availability (for our own peace of mind) and we were told they were full.  Due to this information we automatically thought they would refund our deposit (minus £10 bank charges)! Needless to say we were extremely surprised when we received another email telling us they had been unable to let the room, despite doing their “utmost” to do so and subsequently we would lose the whole of our deposit! We emailed Mike yet again and told him it was stated on the Saturday night we were due to arrive they had been full and he replied they generally didn't take any bookings after 6.00 pm due to staffing issues. Surely this is not doing their "utmost" to re-let a room and why did they tell us on the telephone they were fully booked? His reply contained the words and I quote "So that you have a definitive copy of our Ts&Cs as they stood for your reservation, I copy them below.   If I find merit in your suggestions I may well change them based on that, they also may change for other reasons.   We reserve the right to change our TsCs at any time”.  I will leave the readers to make up their own minds about who is telling "porkies"! I would like to thank Mark N (the reviewer below) who gave us a heads up to have insurance when dealing with this establishment, which we did, albeit because we were worried about snow, not a death in the family.  Subsequently we have been able to recover all our costs from insurance otherwise we were going to go down the legal route as there was a huge loophole in his Ts&Cs, which he basically admitted to.   All in all I think we escaped a miserable two days at an establishment which appears to be constantly penny pinching and profiteering. We are going to use the insurance money towards a planned stay at Belmond le Manoir Aux Quat'Saison,  an establishment which knows the true meaning of first class hospitality, service and empathy. Apologies to readers for the lengthy content of our review.  So much more has been omitted!

Exceptional boutique hotel. We were made to feel very welcome & nothing was too much trouble for the owners. The little details like the Molton Brown products, jelly beans & ducks make our stay particularly memorable. Rooms overlooking the river are fantastic, great location on the city walls and beautiful breakfast.

We booked for our 42nd Wedding Anniversary and found proper 5 star luxury. The staff are very friendly and the food was excellent. Our room was large, airy and beautifully appointed with a view over the garden to the river Dee. A perfect midweek break in a lovely city.
