A great hotel with lots of charm and character. Set in beautiful gardens and a wonderful view of the Downs. Breakfast is freshly cooked and delicious. The room was quaint, with low ceiling access to the shower but a wonderful walk-in wardrobe! We enjoyed our stay.
Went for family gathering,Sunday lunch. Great Hotel in lovely surroundings. Food was very good, friendly chatty staff. Highly recommend.
Lovely friendly staff, beautiful old place, breakfast was amazing and plentiful, didn't skimp at all, Only fault was that our mattresses were old with springs sticking up and uncomfortable to lay on, New mattresses would of got 5 stars.. were there 2 nights and would of been nice if condiments had been put in room for the 2nd night, enjoyed our stay! Thankyou
Very quirky place, very old building allegedly the inspiration for the George Orwell book Animal farm, attentive helpful staff, full English breakfast definitely second to none. If you are looking for the latest all singing and dancing hotel don't choose this one but if you want a friendly adequate, reasonably priced stopover around Eastbourne ideal for Newhaven ferry choose the Chalk Farm Hotel.
We stayed a couple of nights--two adults and a three year old--and were very pleased. The breakfast was really, very good, and we had a great seat next to the garden window both mornings. The room had plenty of space, including the bathroom, though like nearly everywhere we stayed in the UK, not enough hooks for towels. The morning shift was taken by I'm assuming one of the proprietors, and he was amazingly friendly. His colleague in the afternoon helped us find an entrance to the trails that lead up the beautiful hill behind the hotel. Great hike, highly recommend. I would be cautious of staying during an event, as we heard some sound tests that would've kept us up had they continued. Fortunately not, and we had a great stay.
Superb place to stay - great having such wonderful people here - and the learning disability guys and girls are just super people friendly and helpful Thank you for making my stay amazingRooms: 5/5
-AVOID - HOSTS LOUD PARTIES PAST 11pm DIRECTLY UNDER GUESTS ROOMS - THIS WILL NOT BE COMMUNICATED WHEN YOU BOOK OR PUBLISHED ON THEIR WEBSITE. Booked a room for an overnight stay for a wedding after travelling down from Scotland. Looks lovely - room looked fine but on coming back the downstairs area was hosting an insanely loud function with DJ, kareokee and tons of people, which is right below our room. The receptionist lied three 3 times about when it was going to finish 10.15, 10.30, 11- it was like trying to sleep/relax in a club toilet. Still waiting for everyone to leave as I type this, doubt it will be empty and quiet till midnight. The 'hotel' was built in the 1600s and is not fit for purpose to hold functions along with paying guests as you can hear every conversation and the music feels and sounds like it's in the same room. This is completely unacceptable for a hotel! It's not a hostel! They do not care at all about guests at all only about making money unfortunately - I have never had such a terrible experience staying somewhere. Do not bother, especially if you are travelling far or have an early start - thank god we didn't have kids with us! I asked for a refund which was sheepishly suggested it will be passed on to management.
£8 for a pint of Longman lager, albeit from 2 small bottles. Otherwise great service and a lovely atmosphere Service: 4/5
The Chalk Farm Hotel has seen better days. The rooms are in need of attention as are the shared areas. The saving grace however were the staff - a really helpful man on reception and the breakfast chef.Rooms: 3/5
My daughter's baby shower took place here. The afternoon tea was really lovely. The room was nicely laid out and the sandwiches and cakes were wonderful. Scones with jam and cream went down very well. It was clean tidy and very well presented. Lovely atmosphere lovely afternoon highly recommended.
