Birmingham Women's Hospital

Story

Birmingham Women's and Children's NHS Foundation Trust ran Birmingham Women's Hospital in the Edgbaston area of Birmingham, situated very close to the University of Birmingham. On February 1, 2008, it was granted NHS Foundation Trust Status. It merged into Birmingham Women's and Children's NHS Foundation Trust in 2017ServicesThe trust had no cases of MRSA Bacteraemia or C. difficle colitis for more than five years, which makes it one of the best performing trusts in the UK.The first Birmingham maternity hospital was established in 1842 to reduce the number of women and children dying needlessly from puerperal fever and childbirth related infections. This hospital has been at its present site since 1994, and is one of only two trusts in the UK specialising in women's health care. They provide a focused range of health care services, primarily, though not exclusively, to women and their families. These are:Maternity and foetal medicine servicesNeonatal care and newborn transport serviceMilk bank—the only one in the West Midlands. It provides donor breast milk for its own neonatal babies and also distributes donor breast milk to many local and national hospitals including Birmingham Children's Hospital.Fertility services, see separate entry for the Birmingham Women's Fertility CentreGynaecologyGenetics—its genetics laboratories are one of the largest in Europe and, as part of a collaboration with the University of Birmingham, University Hospitals Birmingham NHS FT, Birmingham Children's Hospital NHS FT and Academic Health Science Network, it will be one of 11 centres across the country that are leading the way in delivering the NHS 100,000 Genomes Project.Imaging and pathology services—testing more than 60,000 samples a year. Based in Edgbaston, adjacent to the University Hospital Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust, there are around 150 adult beds and 43 neonatal cots. It had an annual income of over £90 million. On average 50,000 patients a year are cared for, with approximately 3,000 operations and delivery of more than 8,000 babies making it one of the busiest maternity departments in the UK.

Visited here to see a love one. The English nurses were great, the foreign, not so great. It was obvious that the foriegn ones received their "qualifications" abroad and were only hired as boxes needed ticking. They were absolutely clueless. The care and attention received from the British nurses was top notch. The food wasn't too bad neither. Overall, the best hospital I've visited in the Midlands thus far.
I'm incredibly grateful for the exceptional care I received during my emergency C-section at this hospital. The midwife team provided amazing support throughout my labor, and the surgery team handled the C-section with such professionalism and skill. Thanks to their expertise, my recovery has been smooth, and I'm so thankful for their dedication.
I am glad that I had such a wonderful care during the birth. the wonderful Lily H. and the lady who did the internship were very helpful to me everything explained and cared like a member of the family. thank you from the all of my heart.
Birmingham Women's Hospital is a specialized healthcare facility located in Birmingham, England. It focuses on providing care and services related to women's health, including maternity services, gynecology, fertility treatment, and neonatal care.
Huge thank you to midwife Anita in antenatal care, who today went over & above to help arrange my pregnancy scan & liver scan appointment. My dad spoke to her on my behalf, as I’m currently splitting my time between Bham and London due to heavy work commitments. She explained everything so clearly to him and showed a lot of compassion. I hope someone in the management team at BWC reads this and recognises Anita’s service.
The care of women here is of such a poor standard. This isbecause of lack of staff and therefore time. I historically need hysteroscopy under sedation this is known in my records. Have been in pain and post menopausal bleeding since my surgery 8 minths ago. Still waiting. My wait for surgery was 7 years altogether. Yes 7 years for a fibroid surgery. You can cihtact PALS andmake a formal complaint and make requests for things to be done as they should be. For example appropriate comnunication about upcoming surgery basic questions and you will be ignored. That is jnder a formal comllaint system. The complaint is then closed even hought not dealt with, and a patronising letter is sent stating that you are brave to complain. The letter states some changes will be made. However in truth as I am sadly still in this wretched system with an inhumane service and wait times I can see things are worse. Your managment team should raise a red flag becaise you are seriously hurting women and severely affecting their health and life because severe bleeding is ignored for years and the simplest of patients wishes and questions are ignored. These were good surgeons, they are like shells of their former selves. The private sector needs to be made available to everyone free of charge to clear this backlog. They did this in South Korea, look it up, it is possible. Stop this cruelty, pain and suffering please!!
I was induced due to bleeding a few days before due date. The worst part of this was the second midwife that inserted the pessary basically violated me, was just as painful as childbirth with the lack of care she showed. I needed assistance in the middle of the night and the cover staff said she would let the main midwife know as she was unavailable. An hour later, I step out to see the main midwife at her desk, so the message didn't get passed on. The midwife that delivered my baby was great, unfortunately she had to call the doctor in so I had a room full of people to help deliver which was scary but the childbirth bit was fine, it was the neglect in aftercare. Arrived at 3am on the delivery suite, first time parents no clue what we are doing and the midwife tells us off for having no hat or vest top for the baby, had no idea we needed them and never helped us put on his nappy which again we've never done before and was doing it in the dark. No staff at all available during the night, took hours to get someone to bring you water, my baby missed a feed because they didn't bring formula. I mentioned to one midwife I was in a lot of pain with my stomach, at the same time we heard my baby dirty his nappy and she never helped me change him despite the pain I was in. It was the mom's on the ward that helped me thank goodness for them as the staff were not caring at all. After discharge I still was in pain with my stomach natural birth turns out after being fobbed off for almost a week, placenta was left inside me and I needed an evac. At the womens again I was admitted but the procedure kept being put off, bearing in mind I'm a breastfeeding mom with a 1 week old and I can't eat or drink before the evac, it took them 23 hours from being admitted to having the evac, not until I had a meltdown did they actually take me to surgery where they almost double dosed my antibiotics, I had to tell them I've already had the medication as it was not written down. My baby then got an eye infection whilst in there so we had to stay for a week until we both had the all clear. I got told off by another staff member for needing maternity pads, if they hadn't almost killed me by leaving placenta in me I wouldn't have needed them. There were 2 members of staff in the Brown/beige uniforms that were angels, when they were on shift they really looked after me but I probably saw them twice in the whole time I was in hospital. Otherwise the staff had lack of empathy and skill. Seeing my week old baby with a UV in his little hand and having almost died from the placenta and the depression caused from the neglect there is no way I would ever recommend this hospital to have a baby. All hospitals might be the same but I really hope not, they delivered my baby safely which is the most important thing but the journey before and after was really tough because of them. Lastly, I am a white female and had a bad experience at the Birmingham womens hospital just to address the racist reviews on here, you can have a bad experience regardless of skin colour.
Dreadful communication, hostile telephone staff on reception and a poor understanding of how to support disabled patients. Almost impossible to get through to anyone on the phone and so they just discharge you after waiting 18 months to see someone.
I wish I could give this hospital 0 stars. Absolutely disgusting service. Radiology department must be managed by a bunch of 2 year olds with no sense. Currently 7 months pregnant and have not been able to ring and get through to them once. No option to hold, automated message then they hang up Wasted 2 hours today trying to rebook an appointment that was booked for me on 11th at 10am they have informed me about it via letter which arrived through post on 13/11 so resulted in me missing a very important appointment I am so anxious about giving birth at this hospital and very concerned how they are wasting resources funded by our hard earned taxes 7 months of pregnancy and I have not been able to get though this department once
Nothing but praise for this hospital. My wife gave birth to our first baby here yesterday evening and the level of care we received throughout the labor was fantastic. The staff work so hard and so well together. They are very supportive and reassuring which made a stressful delivery much easier. Thank you, we are very grateful for the safe delivery of our newborn son. Mr Nelson.
