If you travel with Virgin, go first class (Book at least a month in advance and you’ll save hundreds of pounds). Regular tea/coffee top ups, regular cold drinks and if you get a morning/late morning or early evening train you get some rather nice options for food. Definitely travelling first class with Virgin again. However I also travelled standard class a couple of months earlier, and it was somewhat disappointing. Crowded and people didn’t know where they were sat because the reservations were wrong- although it did make up the 5 minutes delay by the time it got to Lime Street so I can’t fault that.

My experiences have all been positive travelling both standard and first class. The staff are always friendly and helpful.

Terrible service. My dad accidentally printed an email from Virgin with our transaction ID but not our reference number. The woman at the desk informed us that there wasn’t anything she could do to help us, even when we offered to provide our transaction ID, payment card, and personal information. When we told her that we didn’t remember the name of the station we were going to but it was printed on the email she was holding in her hands she talked to us like we were idiots, telling us that we should know the name of our destination and that we should take care of these things in advance. All she did was talk down to us while making no effort to help, and eventually we had to buy a new set of tickets for £150.

Horrible. Horrible. Horrible. We booked our tickets from the States before we traveled over and I thought I had arranged the correct dates and times, station, etc. Somehow, the departure station came from Piccadilly Manchester when I thought I was booking from Piccadilly out of London. I understood that you could change tickets for a ten pound fee per ticket. But that is ONLY if you book out of the SAME station again, not for another station. I spent over an hour on the phone with them and they refuse to help us at all. The tickets are a complete waste of 176 pounds or $235 American (for people from the states, like me). We will now miss our trip to Scotland, thanks to Virgin Trains, but I am very happy for them that they got all of our money with having to take us anywhere! How nice that must be for them!! Buyer beware of misleading website and policies.

It’s an unpleasant way to travel for me, due to inconsiderate passengers and staff. I travel first class, which means there’s slightly less people to annoy me. But even still I always spend the journey listening to the tinny music leaking out of someone’s headphones. Staff families get on and are usually loud and put tv on a tablet for their kids, with the volume up loud. If you go in the first carriage, you will spend most of the journey listening to the staff chatting, they obviously don’t have much work to do, they get the tea and snacks done in 30mins and spend the rest of the journey shooting the breeze. If you go in the quiet coach it’s always packed and lots of groups drinking, getting more and more rowdy as the journey goes on. And there’s always someone shouting down their mobile. So if you want a quiet journey to get on with some work or read, this isn’t the way to travel. Last straw is the email they sent telling me that I use the 1st class quiet coach and “Only 9% of people value the quiet coach”, so they’re getting rid of it. I found that a bit insulting, they’ve gone out of their way to tell me that my opinion is not something they value. Also find it creepy that they monitor passengers closely enough to know I book the quiet coach! I don’t care they’re getting rid of it, it was a misnomer, it was always noisy! But that email put me off virgin for good. Flying and driving are cheaper and take the same time. Won’t be using virgin trains anymore.
