This has been my go-to library to visit for many years since it is very close to me, and i am quite sad that it will temporarily shut for the next couple of years. i will be frequenting the stamford hill library instead, however i cannot wait to come back here. The staff are helpful and knowledgeable, there is a wide range of books that are laid out very well, and there is a big children’s section that is mostly separate to the main area so it usually does not cause much disruption unless the library is very busy, however it usually is not and it is very quiet. I will miss this place for the next two years, especially as i had planned to revise for exams at the peaceful desks, and will be coming back on reopening day.
As bad as years ago! New and old staff seems somehow untrained, quite unprofessional, and above all lazy and rude... to not say quite bullying and racist too! Still the worst library in Hackney, in my opinion as well. Hopefully, some librarians there will change my mind sooner than later, but it is unlikely having knowing some of them for years, and not having seen much improvement yet. PS Plenty of nicer libraries not too far from there by walk and jumping on a bus! Just a pity, in a nice area like Stokey/Church Street now is, we still get a rough service like if we were in a rough neighbourhood. Stokey and Hackney were two different boroughs in the past, and so should be seen again nowadays, imo. Did you know Hackney libraries' computers do not even let us delete cookies and history probably assuming we live in a bad poor borough Hackney not Stokey so we - most likely - must be bad or poor or both?! But you can delete your history in other boroughs. PS And don't try to reserve a new book there, or some new incompetents may laugh at you saying that libraries are not bookshops, ha! Actually, you can make reservations/suggestions of new books or Dvds to be bought!
It’s a decent library - I joined for my young daughter, and we were given a free bag with a few baby books in which was lovely. It’s great that kids are allowed to take 30 books out - we’ll definitely make use of that as she gets older. There are baby change facilities but sadly not accessible - you have to go up 3 steps to get them - far from ideal with a pram. There are also disabled toilets but those in a wheelchair would have to use the stair lift to get up to them as similarly, there are stairs in the way! A couple of ramps could address both of these accessibility obstacles. Stars knocked off for this.
I have frequented this establishment for quite a number of years and have found their services mostly helpful.
In this place, There is plenty of good material, music , movies and books , good lighting , the people who work here are usually nice, but unfortunately the average user of this library is far from behave as he/her is supposed to behave in this kind of facility. I can say this place it is not a nursery in my knowledge , maybe I am wrong and should not be used in that way, people should speak a little bit less louder and be more respectful of person who are using or at least trying! the library for reading/ learning purposes. I just see people around acting like this library is a park with a roof, parents who are touring children around without any intention to take a book/ movie / or studying and most important even trying to keep their children quiet in any sort of way. A library is a library. I was not able today of carry out any of my duties because of noise mostly caused by children and people so I decided to move to the near park so at least I was able to join a bit of sun.
I like this library. At the present moment it's not in full operation. The staff are friendly and helpful. Their children section is always active and appeals to parents with children especially after school. It is a bonding time for them and a greater way of interacting with each other. It is an open space on one level floor that easily access all the other areas in the library including dedicated security and toilet facilities.
Very good film section. General layout is a bit of a mess. Helpful, and, very importantly, knowledgeable staff one grumpy one - he knows who he is. Excellent use of automation in the library for taking out, returning, and renewing loans, plus very good website option. Overall a very good local library.
No toilets apart from mother and baby change or disabled which we aren’t allowed to use. Me and my friend who are A level students came in to revise recently. There was no space on the main seating area but we were told we were not allowed to sit in the kids area and were instructed to move when we did even though technically we are children. We were then confined to a small table in the ‘teens’ section which is clearly only fit for one person. This is so illogical - fix up stokey library.
I was very dissapointed in my visit today. The CIS Security Guard was sitting in the front parlour playing on his phone for the entire 30 minute duration of my visit without raising his head once to greet or acknowledge anyone entering or leaving the building. Hygiene levels are further below standards than expected. See pictures attached at how badly the toilet was found. Talk about serious health & safety concerns at it's best is an understatement and it reflects badly on the overall care of cleaning and staff interest on how the place looks. I urge management to do better and look into matters but when raising my concerns with staff I was brushed off by saying its weekend a nf theres nothing they can do about it until the cleaners arrive Monday morning. That's not acceptable. As much as I do not like leaving bad reviews I must say today's visit to the stoke newington library was a disappointment and I trust management resolves the issue with urgency. A splash of paint, lick of grout to put up damaged tiles and screws to fix broken wood planks on walls whilst also a quick sweep and mop wouldn't do any harm. Perhaps an overhaul of the outdated 1960s sink might be an option all as part of the supposed regeneration scheme and public spending on local libraries. I will be following up my findings with the council tomorrow morning as this is a public area and must adhere to the health & safety regulation and code of practice when providing access to such facilities for the general public, children and vulnerable adults.
Good atmosphere, nice place for a comfortable read. Very eclectic range of books and very useful for local research. Staff are very friendly, helpful and have a wealth of knowledge. Invaluable for anyone doing research in the area...
