Stein's Fish & Chips

About

Stein’s Fish & Chips boasts both a restaurant and takeaway, located in Padstow on the beautiful North Cornwall coast overlooking the Camel Estuary.

Story

I've always wanted a fish and chip shop, somewhere you can wander in, choose you fish and wait while it cooks. We have a fish and chip shop in Padstow and in 2009 opened one in Falmouth which is my other favourite seaside town in Cornwall, situated on the south coast.

You'll find a menu of cod and haddock together with a large range of local fish like hake, monkfish, John Dory and bass in batter and deep fried in beef dripping to make it really crisp. We serve homemade chips, mushy peas, curry sauce and our mayonnaise-based tartare sauce along with some nice wines and good beer. Rick Stein

Excellent fish and chips served in open boxes (you can close them if you want) to keep the batter lovely and crispy. As ever, best eaten in the open gazing at the sea - but watch out for seagulls keen for morsels.

It's a bit of a nuisance having to stand outside when it's cold and can be a bit of a squash inside, but these factors are quickly forgotten when the food arrives. This is the best place in the world for hake! I love how fresh the fish is and washed down with a cup of tea - delicious!

What you'd expect from a team that know how to create a top notch experience at whatever level of cuisine. Next door is a very good seafood bar and fresh fish shop that is equally worth a visit and part of the Stein empire.

I’ve been back to enjoy the fish and chips here for many years. I have to admit that the last occasion a year or so ago I was disappointed with the service provide but let it slide believing it was just a busy day. However, on revisiting it hasn’t changed and the front of house service was poor and rude at best! General atmosphere seemed slightly oppressive also. Long waiting times for fish and chips with staff casually walking about doesn’t exactly impress. I’d go for the take out only when quiet and never eat in again.

Very good chips, the curry sauce wasn't a chip shop style. Battered mackerel was tough but fresh and tasty. Enjoyed.
