About

Across our three London hospitals, our vision is clear: to deliver world class expertise and local care. We represent the NHS at its best.

Story

The Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust runs three hospitals in London:

• Barnet Hospital
• Chase Farm Hospital
• Royal Free Hospital

In the 21st century we continue to lead improvements in healthcare, from targeted cancer therapies to new kinds of surgery. We offer an exceptionally wide range of local and specialist services, including cancer, plastic surgery, vascular surgery, blood disorders and infectious diseases and are proud to have some of the best clinical outcomes in the country.

In addition to our three main sites, the trust includes a network of clinics provided at other trusts’ hospitals and community sites. Our local catchment area comprises most of the areas covered by Barnet, Camden, Islington and Haringey primary care trusts (PCTs) together with west Enfield and east Brent.

Our aim is to be in the top 10% of English hospitals for clinical quality, customer satisfaction, staff satisfaction and financial performance. We want to give patients the best possible care in a safe, clean and welcoming environment.

Mission

Our mission is to be world class in terms of healthcare treatment, clinical research and teaching excellence. We aim to deliver and develop leading local healthcare in all three of our hospitals, to improve lives and help people thrive.

I came for an appointment a couple of weeks ago the doctor was really helpful and informative, along with the nurses seeing me really quickly to take bloods, slight wait times see the doctor past my appointment time but it was a very busy unit. The only downsides and reason it’s not 5 starts is the parking was full so I spent ages finding somewhere to park a few streets away, and the wait in the pharmacy was far too long I had to to come back another day because the wait was an hour, for them to then tell me 2 of the prescriptions were over he counter, completely understandable it’s a busy hospital but it would’ve been much easier if I could’ve picked the tablets up at my own pharmacy.
I had a great experience throughout my pregnancy and delivery after I’ve transferred from another hospital. All the anti natal appointments with the midwife were at the hospital, great communication and care. Triaje department always so helpful and reassuring. The care after birth was very good, lots of check-ups, nice staff and good food. Thank you!
It's indescribable how unpleasant it is to use a lift in this hospital. There are three lifts designated for staff to transport patients on beds, but they frequently use other lifts. There are eight more lifts for patients with appointments and visiting families, yet they too use the wrong lifts. Additionally, there are four more lifts Staff Only Goods Lift , one of which is always locked for catering use only. Patients on beds and those with appointments are using lifts they shouldn't, and with all the beds and wheelchairs with patients on it using the wrong lifts, there's no room for staff to use the "staff only goods lift". PS: You should try the canteen, the food is a bit spicy but at least the food is good in here!!
Horrendous A&E hospital. Waiting time is over 10 HOURS! There are elderly patients crying out in agony and just being left in wheelchair with staff walking past not giving a care in the world. I asked the lady if she needed help and she couldn’t speak proper English. I asked a lady in green scrubs if she can help because the lady is clearly suffering and needs urgent assistance. She replied with lout even looking at me or stopping in her steps and replied with I’m not a nurse. No compassion or respect even towards me, let alone this poor elderly lady who was suffering. Why are you working in care and you have no compassion? After 10 hours and still not being seen we went home and went to a different hospital. Seen within 2 hours! Shocking and disgusting a&e department.
I'd implore anyone considering this hospital not to rely too heavily on positive Google reviews, as I did. Please dig deeper. This review is the final straw for a series of consistently negligent and concerning mistakes by The Royal Free Hospital across multiple visits and treatments. 1. Administration & Communication Issues: A I wasn’t informed of a broken bone for nearly 10 days, despite my X-ray results being confirmed on the day I was discharged from A&E. My records showed no attempt to contact me. After failing to reach the Royal Free myself, I knew something was wrong and visited another hospital to confirm the broken bone. And then,-- very conveniently -- on the same day I formally complained to PALS The Royal Free finally decided to contact me. B It’s nearly impossible to get through to reception to access records. I called maybe four times on different days, waited 40 minutes each time before being rerouted to the operator, hung up on, or sent to unrelated departments. C My partner, who takes immunosuppressive medication, constantly has to fight the hospital to receive it on time. D My partner has a team of nurses for his condition but is often ignored, sent out-of-office emails, or given delayed responses. 2. Serious Communication Failures Among Staff: A Last November, my partner, who has Crohn's disease, visited A&E with severe pain and bleeding. After a CT scan, a doctor told him he had free fluids in his abdomen and needed an IV and surgery the next day. He was admitted, told not to eat, and put on an IV. The next morning, no one knew about the surgery, gave him meals and IV simultaneously, gave conflicting information, and when he asked about the free fluids, they said, "What free fluids?" He was given no explanation and had to fight for discharge. The obs nurse bizarrely took their phone out and showed my partner pictures of their kids to try and convince him to stay. Doesnt even feel dramatic to say I'm relieved he was not operated on at this hospital. B My partner’s physical examinations are unavoidably invasive and painful, but pain relief can be provided. On his first examination at The Royal Free, he was asked if he needed pain relief, and each time he clearly, repeatedly confirmed he did. He spoke to multiple members of staff about this before the procedure. Despite this, he was still not given pain relief and was later told they "weren’t aware" he wanted it. He has had other near-misses where he had to remind staff of this incident just to ensure his needs were met. I’m bewildered by the 5-star reviews, given the negative reputation this hospital has, *even among staff at other NHS hospitals!* While I understand the NHS is in crisis and this review doesn’t reflect every department or staff member, the Royal Free’s issues go beyond COVID or underfunding—most other NHS hospitals manage basic patient care. This hospital feels like it’s barely held together, and I wouldn't trust it with anything serious. TL;DR: I feel unsafe in the care of The Royal Free, nor do I trust them with my loved ones' health.
I am immensely grateful for the exceptional care and dedication shown by the staff at Royal Free Hospital Hampstead Heath. From the moment I walked in, I was treated with the utmost kindness and professionalism. The medical team was incredibly knowledgeable and compassionate, ensuring I felt comfortable and well-informed throughout my treatment. Special Thank You to nurse Princess, Ward 5 B East :: The facilities are top-notch, and the overall atmosphere is one of genuine care and respect. Thank you for your outstanding service and for making a difference in the lives of so many!
Someone accidentally discharged me from this hospital which cancelled all my appointments by text the day before saying they'd get back to me ASAP but a week later they didn't, i spent all day on hold calling multiple lines no one had any idea what was going on, someone said they'd call back in half an hour I waited over an hour to then have to call myself, 2 midwives ignored my texts, 2 appointments have now been missed just unprofessional and dangerous as I'm already over a week late for the gestational diabetes test which I'm considered high risk for. Just very stressful and frustrating and I'm considering changing hospitals as I don't really feel safe having a baby here.
Highly professional and friendly care at the RF ER and ward 6 East on Sunday 18th and Monday 19th for my 81 year old Mother with a blood clot. Especially impressed with the clear and thoughtful information provided at all stages from the ambulance staff to health professionals at the hospital. Non medical staff with also very caring from reception team to ward staff. Only comment is please check the hand washing facilities as the soap bags didn't work in the ER toilet or on the ward. District nurse office called at 8.50 next morning to book follow up .Many thanks to everyone we met.
I have only been in contact with this hospital by phone, as a family member is being treated there, and I am extremely pleasantly surprised by my experience. From the super friendly lady at the switchboard to the immediate connection with her treating doctor, who very patiently explained everything to me and answered all my questions even tough it was a Sunday. The service exceeded my expectations. A very positive experience!
I’m still in here. Three days in for cardiac care. Absolutely fabulous. Can’t fault doctors, nurses, administration, food fabulous, and all ancillary staff. What can I say. And they saved my life as well!!
