I paid £2,700 for a mattress from John Lewis with a 7 year warranty, expecting the quality and customer care the brand is known for. After just 3 years of normal use, the mattress developed serious dipping and loss of support and now clearly needs replacing.nnJohn Lewis arranged an inspection through Castelan and concluded the mattress is “within normal tolerances for its age”. I completely reject that. A mattress at this price, sold with a 7 year warranty, should not be in this condition after only 3 years.nnThis is not misuse. The mattress has been on a solid, heavy, structurally sound bed frame from day one. It has simply not lasted as a reasonable person would expect.nnWhat is most frustrating is that John Lewis are hiding behind a warranty assessor’s definition of “tolerances” rather than addressing the basic issue of durability. Something can be “within tolerance” and still have failed far too early for what was sold.nnFor context, I have owned mattresses from other retailers that cost half as much and lasted over 15 years without this problem.nnI also contacted the bed manufacturer, who confirmed the slat spacing is 75mm, contradicting the measurement recorded in the inspection report. That raises further questions about how reliable the assessment was in the first place.nnThis experience has been hugely disappointing from a retailer that markets itself on trust, quality and service.
Demo at the Clinique Counter at the John Lewis Department Store cosmetics floor: 8/FebnnI went for foundation. Patricia was my clinician. She was very friendly, highly approachable and able to talk me through basics i.e. skin type, foundation type.nnShe helped me refine a suitable product range for the finished look I had envisioned. There was even a chart for those who like visual info! Then we colour matched the foundation and I got a demo which was very fun. The counter is well lit, clean and neat.nnI am delighted with the products and the service. I got a few small testers too which was a nice touch.nnJust to note: the counter space is small so 1-2 people at a time, but very within reason and she handled customers who were keen to book in very professionally whilst with me. Highly recommend popping along if you have questions, the service is insightful, suggestive but not pushy.
I visited Edinburgh in October 2025 and bought a Dune bag from this John Lewis store. I am not based in the UK. Unfortunately after only using the bag for a few days the stitching on one of the sides of the main zipper came apart which now leaves me with additional costs for repair. I have contacted customer services in regards to this and I highlighted that I am not based in the UK. Their response was that they could only help me if I physically visited one of their stores. As a tourist I'd advice to only buy from John Lewis at your own risk as their customer service is not helpful at all towards tourists. I would have expected a postal return option or a partial reduction to help cover cost of repair. Very disappointed.
There is a lot of not so good reviews about John Lewis but I think this is the best shop in Edinburgh. I have bought many things in the Edinburgh branch.....from microwave, TV etc and I popped up to there xmas shop. I saw a tree on display and I asked if it was in stock. The lady went away to check so nice she was. Yes the last one so bought it along with xmas decorations as well.....it was fantastic. The staff are all friendly and very helpful. We went to there larger cafe and got a lovely cheese scone which was huge and a lovely lattie......if you want quality go here. What a lovely shop with lovely things.nnOnly thing that I will say is there could be more staff especially at xmas time to help. The customer collection point could be better signed so it is more noticed.nnThank you John Lewis....x
This is a great store. It has such a wide variety of products available. We did struggle a bit to find some assistance but this did not trouble us too much. Great selection in their kitchen department.
