Very friendly owner, Karen. Great choice of beers on the barrel. One of the very rare places in the entire UK which has a stupendous clock; it will mesmerise you just watching the minute handle tick on every single second; it moves 3,600 times per minute. An engineering feast. The garden is the best among the Rochester pubs. Was there not long ago for tap dancing by Irish Ladies with original Irish music band.
I would have never have gone in this pub if just passing by - but it really is a hidden gem for those in the know : the two rooms have different feels depending on what you want but wherever you sit, there's great beer and Karen the landlady creates a really friendly atmosphere. Always fun things going on, and really varied events.
This pub looks - from the outside, a little run down tbh - inside.... it is pretty much the same however, Karen the landlady always ensures the there are some of the best - well kept real ales for you to enjoy. The Eagle-eyed amongst you will observe that the barrels have pipes entering and leaving the barrels to ensure that the beer is kept at the optimum temperature.
As I have said in a different guise. From the outside, this pub may not appear to be the most salubrious - inside it is... Well.... Similar . BUT and it is a shame the font size cannot be increased as this is a big BUT the beer is always excellent and Karen is the perfect Landlady, and you will find this one of the friendliest pubs in the known Universe you can check this with Arthur Dent
A very good old style music pub Yes it looks a bit "worse for wear " on the outside but in side was full of happy people and a great atmosphere Karen is an excellent host.....long may it remain cos there ain't a lot left like this !!
A real proper, friendly, two bar, local. Great real ale and cider. An influential folk club and other live music. A good garden too.
5 stars nowhere enough for this gem, a absolutely splendid pub, from the street a bit dubious but when you enter, well its a pub and half enthusiastic landlady out the top drawer, a rack of beers on the back wall in excellent condition pleasant surroundings they made you feel right at home, this little gem needs to be visited its a real local treasure
Very friendly and genuine pub. Also has a truly lovely pub garden. Highly recommended. Joint best pub in Rochester along with the Man of Kent.
The GI is like pubs used to be. Had no pretensions to be something it isn't. Great real ales, live music 2-3 nights a week mostly unplugged/folk
Traditional back street pub. Good range of real ales on offer especially during the Sweeps festival weekend when there is a beer festival in the garden.
