Story

The combination of a family run business, friendly atmosphere and well cooked food is the key the success of The Axe and Compass over the past 21 years.

Situated in the picturesque rural village of Arkesden. The Axe & Compass provides a warm homely welcome to all. Built circa 1650, with the right hand side extension added in the early nineteenth century The Axe & Compass is a stunning example of one of Essex’s charming traditional thatched inns.

Can only review from a drinking point of view as I didn't eat there. Basic selection of real ales but kept well. Obvious that the priority here is food and the menu looked very good. Saw food coming out of the kitchen which also looked appetising.

A strange dining experience. Went for a relaxed dinner with friends and kept getting hurried to the table despite arriving 20 mins before the booking time. After the 3 time of being told to sit down we did and picked through the menu. The normal selection of pub food on offer with some strange additions added in. Poor vegetarian selection and if your Gluten free then no hope. Portions were small and the selection of vegetables consisted of over cook cabbage and soggy green beans. The dessert trolley ( yes actually a trolley) was well stocked with great looking pubs. Puds were good but expensive. Overall not a dreadful meal but I'm not rushing to go back. A good meal is always subjective but I won't be returning.

I've eaten here regularly over several years. The food is consistently good, with friendly staff and a great traditional country pub feel. We'll worth a visit to this pretty village with a great pub.

Little Gem. Great food good menu with wide choice and variety all home cooked. Lots of fresh herb flavours. Amazing dessert trolley. Will definitely return.
