The restaurant and hotel are generally nice, rooms are pleasant but could do with general maintenance.nStarting with arrival, my experience was the same as some others I arrived, was seen but the staff then walked around the few minutes before checking me in. I was the only customer at the time.nThe bedroom was cold, there is a small electric heater but the hotel could have used some heat generally. The bathroom needs some maintenance with water damage around the shower and the vent blocked with fluff so wasn't extracting I cleared this myselfnBreakfast was from 7. I arrived at 7, orders were eventually taken and I got my breakfast at 7.35. I'd ordered porridge and poached eggs on toast.nThe porridge was ordered plain. It was salted. They don't even salt porridge in Scotland! Being in a rush due to the time the food took I had to just eat the porridge.nFinally a positive the restaurant is very good the service is reasonably quick and the food is tasty and good value. I had a lentil moussaka, so I can vouch for the vegetarian food.
Lovely, quirky rooms with tons of character. Great, comfy bed. Very welcoming and friendly staff. Breakfast and dinner were good. The only slight issue was that there were no windows in my room, but a skylight which lit up the room at daybreak at 4.30am and woke me up! Not the end of the world, but an eye mask would have been a good idea. Also, there is no parking and I had a few heavy bags to carry in the rain from the public car park a few minutes away.. Again, not the end of the world and wasn't to the detriment of my stay, which was lovely, but worth bearing in mind.
We came for dinner. I've been coming to Cross Keys for a number of years and I'm sorry to say that your biggest problem is consistency. Sometimes we get a nice meal, and sometimes its a disaster - this trip was a bit of disaster. We booked for 2 at 6PM - met some friends and tried to call to update the booking - no answer. The place was empty when we arrive except 2 tables so lucky you could accommodate the table of 6. We choose the specials on the board - then, after the waiter went to the kitchen, we got told that the specials were OFF. Some of us ordered the mussels - it was starter sized portion with a main course sized price - sauce was delicious but the mussels were teeny.nnFor dessert a couple of us ordered the afogato - only to then be told after another trip by the waiter to the kitchen that the coffee machine was switched off. It was 8PM on Saturday night. We suggested they switched it on but the couldn't as it had been cleaned and the manager wasn't there to ask.nnI see this in a lot of places. Poor waiting staff trying to do their best and getting a hard time from customers because they lack training to give good service and the autonomy to make good experiences for customers.nnIt's all down the the training of staff and the leadership - you've lost the focus on serving the customer. That's why you're empty on a Saturday night.nnI really want to support local businesses but it will be a while before I'm brave enough to come in again.
100% reccomended.Excellent pub/hotel. Staff were very friendly and extremely helpful. The whole establishment was very clean, and the rooms were immaculate. I didn't eat there, but I spoke to another guest who said the food was excellent. I can attest to the high quality of the ale. Hotel is ideally situated in the town centre. No parking on site, but the nearest car park is within two minutes walking and on a flat, so I had no issues. Will be visiting again.
Lovely old pub with friendly service; also well located in Saffron Walden.nWe had a corner room so quite noisy on a Friday night but room fine with large fluffy towels.nEvening meal and breakfast had a good choice of food that delivered as promised.
