Torquay Museum

About

The Museum at the heart of Torbay English Riviera Global Geopark, telling the fascinating story of Torbay's natural and cultural heritage.

Story

Founded in 1844 Torquay Museum is Devon’s oldest established Museum.

We have an exciting programme of temporary exhibitions, children's activities and events and an education service for schools.

We are at the heart of the Torbay English Riviera Global Geopark. Our permanent exhibitions tell the fascinating story of Torbay's natural and cultural heritage.

The Time Ark tells the story of our planet and the moments when earth-shattering changes took place, such as the great mountain building of the Carboniferous period and the huge swings in climate that took place in the Pleistocene, from tropical to arctic conditions and back.

See amazing artefacts and fossils from Torquay's famous Kent's Cavern prehistoric caves, where our ancestors made their home as long as half a million years ago - Neanderthal tools, woolly mammoth teeth, cave bear skulls and the jawbone of what is thought to be the oldest human in north west Europe.

Follow the incredible journeys made by Torquay's famous explorers, from the frozen wastes of the Antarctic to the depths of the Brazilian rain forest and come face-to-face with wonderful artifacts from ancient Egypt, including Devon's only Mummy.

Why not visit our lovely café serving home cooked local produce.

Our shop stocks an excellent range of quality gifts, cards and books, including an extensive stock of secondhand and new books by Agatha Christie.

Quite boring for the cost of admission. Displays are very basic and honestly have nothing to do with the history of Torquay or Devon for that matter.nCharles Darwin and Agatha Christie display was probably the best, however still displayed poorly.nI’d pass on this attraction.
Enjoyed our visit. When we paid our ticket, it became a year's free entry also.
This is a fantastic natural history museum with plenty to keep both kids and adults interested. There's a great café to recharge the batteries, and enough artifacts and exhibits to keep you busy for the best part of a day. There are also lots of activity days like Science Ninjas where kids can get involved with hands-on science experiments!
We visited the museum because they had curated and LGBTQ+ 'trail' through the various rooms and displays. You had to look for a QR code to read about the LGBTQ+ connection with the exhibit. There was also a fact sheet if using the QR code was a problem. The museum is probably the best local history museum I have visite and it was enhanced by the LGBTQ+ trail which is a permanent feature.
A small local museum but really nice. We went because they have an exhibit about the 90's so my wife and I thought it would be nice to show our child some of the things we grew up with. Besides this exhibit there were also some nice interactive areas to keep our 8 year old happy, and a bit more detail for us to read.
