Plymouth City Museum & Art Gallery

Story

Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery in the Drake Circus area of Plymouth, Devon, England is the largest museum and art gallery in the city. It was built in 1907–10 by Thornely and Rooke in Edwardian Baroque style. The Museum and Art Gallery is currently closed for major redevelopment and is set to re-open as part of the Plymouth History Centre (working title) in spring 2020.CollectionsThe Museum has collections of fine and decorative arts, natural history and human history. The natural history collection consists of over 150,000 specimens and an historic natural history library and archive. Many prehistoric artefacts from Dartmoor, important Bronze Age and Iron Age material from Mount Batten and medieval and post-medieval finds from Plymouth are found in the human history collection alongside artifacts from ancient Egypt and other ancient cultures of Europe and the Middle East. The art collections include 750 easel paintings, over 3,000 watercolours and drawings, at least 5,000 prints and a sizeable collection of sculptures. A large proportion of the art was donated to the people of Plymouth in 1852 by William Cotton (1794–1863) and is known as the Cottonian Collection. It had been put together principally by the collector Charles Rogers (1711–1784), and includes works by Sir Joshua Reynolds who was born locally.

What a brilliant place!!!nI'll be honest, I came for the mammoth nnHowever alongside that was a fantastic natural history display, 100 travels featuring some fantastic artifacts from Egypt, China, Myanmar and more. There's also an archive, art galleries and a cafe plus a well stocked shop.nnFree entry please consider donating and just a nice place to wander around
Came for a look round while I was visiting Plymouth. Very interesting to learn about the naval history of Plymouth over the years. Great to be able to use the seated areas at various places throughout throughout museum. Also great to see exhibitions of artwork by various other people, some of which was quite thought provoking. I would say this is good for anyone of any age & a great indoor attraction too.
This museum is super awesome, and even is free for ticket. The layout of the exhibition hall and the display of exhibits are also very interesting. I particularly like the media room and the room with many glass jar specimens. Before I left, I bought seagull and turtle toys as souvenirs. The price was very reasonable.
Spent an interesting and entertaining couple of hours here but could have spent even more time here if we had arrived earlier as there is lots to see and do! The ships figureheads display is fabulous, as are the galleries but the best part was the video presentation about Plymouth through the ages - presented beautifully and learnt so much. Would visit again. Staff and volunteers friendly and welcoming.
The Box, located in Plymouth, Devon, England, is a museum, gallery, and archive that opened in 2020. It houses a collection of approximately 2 million items, making it a significant cultural and historical hub in the region.nBefore you even step inside The Box you can’t miss the 14 monumental ships’ figureheads floating above the entrance.nGreat museum for a day out, there is so much about plymouths history throughout the ages. Nicely set out, ace trip and a lovely cafe at the end. Comfy, cosy and great. It's completely free entry!
