Berry Pomeroy Castle

Story

Tucked away in a deep wooded valley, Berry Pomeroy Castle is the perfect romantic ruin. Within the 15th-century defences of the Pomeroy family castle looms the dramatic ruined shell of its successor, the great Elizabethan mansion of the Seymours. Their mansion was intended to become the most spectacular house in Devon. Never completed, and abandoned by 1700, it became the focus of blood-curdling ghost stories, recounted in the audio tour.

I absolutely loved the ruins of berry pomeroy castle. There is an entry fee, but it is well worth it. The sights are amazing, being able to see what used to be certain chambers. The information plaques do a great job of giving accurate information. There's a lovely café on the property, very affordable and nice staff. Great for a day out!

After joining English heritage recently this was our first place to visit. We spent about an hour hear looking around and learning about the castle using handheld speaker. The castle ruins are well maintained and there was drama performance and poetry. But no ghosts today.

This is a castle well worth visiting with a very useful taped guide and stunning views. It works for children and adults and the cafe beside it is excellent.

Another English gem of a private castle. Never intended as a true place of defence, more like an discreet show of money and power while it lasted. Some nice touches though!

Very nice place audio guide or booklet is a must to make sense of some of the areas. About £10.40 entry for adults with audio and guide book. The two roads down to the castle are small and winding so go carefully. The carpark is a good size with two bluebage spaces. The staff are friendly and are always willing to answer questions. The small souvenir shop has a few nice bits to buy and the cafe has a good selection of food and drinks. The castle its self is a smaller one but you are allowed in to many areas.
