Royal Albert Memorial Museum

Story

Royal Albert Memorial Museum & Art Gallery is a museum and art gallery in Exeter, Devon, the largest in the city. It holds significant and diverse collections in areas such as zoology, anthropology, fine art, local and overseas archaeology, and geology. Altogether the museum holds over one million objects, of which a small percentage is on permanent public display. It is a 'Major Partner Museum' under the Arts Council England administered programme of strategic investment, which means RAMM receives funding to develop its services. RAMM receives this funding in partnership with Plymouth City Museum & Art Gallery. Previously they were described as 'hub museums' under the 'Renaissance' Programme for regional museums which operated between 2002–11 and funded by the now defunct Museums Libraries & Archives Council .Founded in 1868, the museum is housed in a Gothic Revival building of local New Red Sandstone that has undergone several extensions during its history; most recently, the museum was re-opened in December 2011 after a redevelopment lasting four years and costing £24M. Since its re-opening the museum has received several awards.HistoryEstablishment and early periodThe site for the museum was donated by Richard Sommers Gard, MP for Exeter from 1857 to 1864, and a competition for its design attracted 24 entries, including one from John Hayward, whose gothic design was the winner. His original plan called for a tall central tower like that at the Oxford University Museum of Natural History, but that feature was rejected and was replaced by a gable and rose window.

The museum itself was lovely. Lots of things to see and different, interesting exhibits. However our visit was soured somewhat by the attitude of some of the staff members. Firstly we were approached when trying to give our young child a drink. I understood that drinks weren't allowed in the exhibits but we were sat by the children's play area so hardly causing any issue. But they were adamant that the drink (a bottled juice drink with a sports cap) had to be put away. Secondly when walking through the art gallery out 1 year old daughter was make some noise. She had discovered that the room was echoey and found it funny to woo every so often. A lot of people were smiling because it was cute however a member of staff in the room felt the need to rudely shush a 1 year old child. Appalling behaviour if you ask me and put a sour note on what was otherwise a pleasant day's activity

The Royal Albert Memorial Museum (RAMM) is a modest sized museum, which is good entertainment for a morning or afternoon. You would probably struggle to spend the whole day there unless you want to go round twice! They have fun activities for children throughout the exhibitions and rooms, although some are looking a little tired from everyday use. There's also a really good local history exhibition showing the evolution of Exeter and the surrounding area. The cafe is as you would expect for a small museum, with a limited range of warm food. Overall, we were very impressed and would recommend for all ages.

One of the best medium sized museums I have been to in the uk. The permanent displays are beautifully presented in modern and spacious viewing galleries. Lifts to all floors with clear signage and spacious walkways. The staff are very helpful and willing to advise when prompted. A value for money cafe with plenty of seating. The gallery has different exhibitions on a regular basis which are very well curated.

Great little museum, located just down the road from Exeter Central. Some nice exhibits, both with local history and world history, with some nice interactive bits for kids. There is a small art gallery upstairs with some interesting paintings. They also have small lockers (£1 coin to use, which you get back) so you don't have to carry your bags & coats around. Definitely worth setting aside a couple of hours to visit this free museum.

A great museum with super helpful and really friendly staff. When I was passing through Exeter I decided to check this place out and the staff helped me with my bags and locked them up safely for me as they were too big for the lockers. A great place for people of all ages
