In the heart of historic Lancaster, The Toll House Inn (was Penny Street Bridge) is an ideal location for exploring the city on foot or heading out to the coast and countryside. Originally the site of the old Toll House at the gateway to the city, the imposing Victorian listed building has a wealth of architectural features inside- all of which have been retained as part of major re-development in 2007.

To get the less good things out of the way first, the few small gripes we had were that there weren’t any water glasses or milk for the tea/coffee in the room; the shower didn’t drain properly, so you were stood in a pool of warm water (which wasn’t all that pleasant); there weren’t really vegetarian options for the cooked breakfasts; and they were a bit funny about us leaving our car for a couple of extra hours, even though when we came past later having paid for parking elsewhere, all of the spaces were free... In the good column, the staff were (the above interaction aside, perhaps) really lovely, the pub area is big and spacious with a really good selection of food and drink (and has been done up really nicely, it looks great), and the room itself was quite small but well appointed with nice (and quality) furniture. The stay represented good, although perhaps not great, value - however in no way did I feel ripped-off. The location is good, near the canal and a short walk from the town centre, with Williamson Park just up the hill to the east. There are a few good options for pub hotels in Lancaster city centre, but having not stayed here before, it will definitely be somewhere that we consider for future visits.

The staff were really nice and extremely helpful. The rooms are very nice, mine was facing the road but was still quiet. Rooms have bottled water fresh coffee bags a selection of tea, milk is provided in a little flask from reception that is also the pub’s bar, if you don’t get offered it at checkin just ask. The breakfast was awesome, hot food is to order so leave time. All round excellent experience.

Nice clean atmosphere and good bar menu. It’s right next to the hospital so I popped in for lunch. Their light lunch menu is priced reasonably (£7.50 for a fresh tasting king prawn linguine with chilli) so I’m happy. Finding a garden was a bonus.

Stayed a few times. There’s very nice rooms, they’ve got a decent bar and restaurant downstairs. Price is competitive and similar to what you’d expect in this kind of hotel. Parking an issue due to its location with a few spots round the back you can pay extra to reserve. But you will get a space across on another car park if you couldn’t book.

Great pub/hotel. Have stayed here many times now and many times to come. Lovely rooms, great food and very friendly staff. See you again soon guys 😉
