The Punter
"The Punter is a cheerfully baggy pub that has a certain scrappy authenticity. Now in our tenth year we've been lucky enough to have organically grown a fabulous crowd of customers - from postgrads and dog lovers to arty, beardy types and determined regulars who'll make the journey from the other side of the river for their favourite dish at their favourite table. We take food seriously and have built a reputation for good quality, unpretentious pub staples mixed in to a regularly changing menu that makes way for more lush, adventurous dishes. The pub, an old coaching inn, occupies a generous corner spot, encompassing a separate bar area and converted Barn wrapped around a quirky courtyard."

This pub restaurant avoided over-use of salt. So many times, you go for a meal at a pub and they demolish your taste buds with salt. The next morning, you wake up feeling as though someone had vacuumed up your mouth. Delightfully, despite having a salty main, this pub did not fall foul of this. We were able to reserve a table and it did not become busy until 6pm, at which point it was loud - having low ceilings - but not unbearably so. I had the burger, which was generous and tasty though the bread was a little dry, and chips, which you can see from the photograph were plentiful. I was a little disappointed in the drinks options - which is strange for a pub! There were many amendments and redacted aspects of the drinks menu, which made it rather difficult to understand what was actually available, and despite my careful reading of this menu the item I asked for first wasn't available. Furthermore, there did not seem to be any cocktails. Perhaps there was a separate menu for cocktails, but if so, this menu was not on the table or clearly visible from where I was sat. For dessert, I had the dark chocolate cheesecake. While pleasant for a few mouthfuls, the dark chocolate is just too dark and the lasting taste is chalky. Prices were reasonable in consideration of recent inflation: some £14 for the burger and £5 or so for the cheesecake. They take card including American Express.
One of our best meals in Cambridge by far! Cute little pub and gluten free options labeled on the menu which I always appreciate. I had the lamb steak with veg and garlic potatoes and it was so delicious. Hubby had steak tagliata and it was cooked to perfection! Will definitely be back. Take note that the dinner starts at 5pm. Maybe weekends good is served all day, not sure
Really great food in a lovey relaxed pub atmosphere. The service was very nice and attentive, with friendly serving staff. The food was pretty good. Steak and aubergine were fantastic, chicken was a just ok. Great for larger groups or a relaxed evening.
I dined twice in the Punter recently. The food is very good. It tends to get very noisy in the evening if you sit inside because of the acoustics - also reserve a place as it is popular. It's not too great with kids as it gets a bit claustrophobic with a lot of interesting objects around the walls that they are not allowed to touch and no alternative entertainment. In an adult-only setup it is very cosy, very nice atmosphere and decoration.
The Punter was a very friendly bar with very nice food and great service. For the food, we ordered the fried squid and the fish and chips, and especially the fish and chips was better than most restaurants in the UK, while the squid had a nice crust and sauce to dip in. We also had the Punter beer, which wasn’t really for my taste, but we still would recommend this place for its good portion sizes and food quality.
We went to have a lunch but we arrived late, so we only drink a local beer and enjoyed the comfy environment. We seated outside. I do recommed the pub for everybody. I would like to be back and try the dishes.
really cute pub. had a lovely roasted sweet potato with avocado, feta, onions, and greens. extremely flavorful lemony dressing as the bed of the dish and it worked so well.
Nice atmosphere. Good food. Good value. Sunday lunches in the barn can be very noisy however! Kid-friendliness: Much too much!
I will go back. the best pub lunch that I have had in years. The food was delicious - the trout pate had a lovely celery side salad with excellent toast. The fish and chips with lashings of peas were just like they tasted in the last century! Excellent!
Tasty and comforting home cooking. Lived-in decor, relaxing atmosphere. Reasonable prices. Beer choices could be a little more dynamic but a fair few pubs are guilty of that these days. Would happily recommend to almost anyone.
