Popped into the Old Gaolhouse on their curry night. Had a chicken korma with rice, garlic nan and Poppadoms. Chicken was very good, very tender pieces of breast. Nan bread was inedible sadly, cardboard comes to mind. The meal included an alcoholic drink for under £10, pretty good value.
It was Christmas market day, around lunch time, when we opted for the local Weatherspoon to rest our feet and grab some lunch. The place was heaving but we eventually found a table... in fact there's not much to say a part that the whole experience has been pleasant, without too much wait considering. The food was good enough for the prices, the drinks cold and the toilets were looked after regularly. It will not stand as a memorable time but it was decent.
I do love a Wetherspoons! This one stood up to expectations! Nice staff, good beer
This pub is in an old historic building that used to be a gaol from about 1228. Now, a popular pub with good food, community vibe and in a good central location. We stopped here for lunch on a rainy Tuesday and enjoyed the Steak Club offerings. The sirloin was beautifully cooked, we loved that we could choose healthy options as sides baked potato instead of fries.. or a mediterranean salad. We also enjoyed the warm drink on offer and was delighted to see the oat milk alternative is on offer. We'll come again!
Full marks to the team who are serving , friendly ,pleasant but this has got to be one the worst spoons I've been in , the pic is outside the kitchens , really needs to be screened off , the menu seems to be limited , maybe to suit the needs of the student clientele, as with the toilets they've seen better days , which again is unlike spoons , the 2 stars are for the team members
We came here for lunch and again later in the day for drinks before getting the train home. I ordered a pizza from the Christmas menu and it was lovely, our groups good all came out within a reasonable time considering how busy they were. The staff were helpful and everything was delicious. Although it was packed, the atmosphere of the place was really good with most people seeming to be in good spirits.
It's a mixed bag here. Relatively reasonably priced drinks compared to other nearby establishments but a lacklustre service. Last week was my first visit in about 4/5 years and I can see the decline since Pre-Covid. I wouldn't eat the food here, the place looks as ropey as some of it's customers. If it wasn't for the slightly sombre atmosphere I could have imagined a Nancy-esque figure to burst in and sing Oom-Pah-Pah whilst clanking around tankards of hooch. The wall light fittings look like they were made from torture devices, which I guess is fitting given the pubs name. Good place to grab a cheeky one or two on your way in or out of the city to the train station, a pit stop if you will as you walk uphill to get there. 10/15 years ago this place was actually relatively nice for a Wetherspoons and busy, a nice mix of people choosing to eat in a place that was very good value for money but it just looks dated now, and lacks the atmosphere it used to have. The people in there looked as dejected as the decor. It could be great again but it needs some TLC. Hopefully once the cyclical economic wheel turns once more, and we the customers and in turn the businesses that rely on our increasingly squeezed disposable income are out of the depths of financial despair the place will get much needed investment. In the meantime whilst we wait to get out of the current economic hell we are living in, the staff could help make the place seem more attractive by being more proactive with customer service, knowing their products, and even extend to showing a little enthusiasm/willing when serving. Tired grubby places can get away with a lot and be seen as retro/full of character if the atmosphere makes up for other shortcomings. Many an old pub/bar has managed this. Wetherspoons your greatest assets are your staff when they have the right training, motivation, and reward.
It was very busy when we arrived but the service was fast and efficient. Nice bookshelf...can have a good read whilst waiting for food. Over all good value for money.
Even for a wetherspoons, this was naff. Arrived and ordered 2 pints from a manager who didnt seem to understand how the till worked. Pints were fine, decided to order food and another pint each on the app, an 'empire state' burger and my usual spoons order, the ultimate burger. Burgers were absolutely cremated, chips werent cooked through, and the onion rings were tough like they had been left out for ages. Didnt finish the meal and left disappointed to catch the bus home. Only good bit was the pints werent expensive, but still pricier than the same pint in Andover's wetherspoons by 30p. Also the hand driers were not working in the mens bathroom. Would not recommend to a friend. Final complaint would be they couldn't lend me a pen as i forgot mine so could not do my sudoku, but this is not a big problem and is mainly my own fault for not bringing my own.
This spoons is one of the dirtiest ive been too, its worser than the one in reading. The food wasn't cooked very well. Blonde girl in spoons uniform possible cook or cleaner drinking shots, Seems like its poorly run by people who are mates rather than working colleagues.
