The Fence Gate has a motto on its coat of arms - Qualitas Modum Vitae Est. That means “quality is a way of life”. Because this historic 18th century building overlooking scenic Lancashire countryside is not just for meeting and eating. Fantastic food! Quick and friendly service. The bar is dog friendly. The restaurant is not. Same menu in both. You can't reserve a table in the bar it's first come first served. They didn't have all the gins on their 9 page gin menu but you'll still be spoilt for choice.

I had booked a table for 2 but then when I arrived the booking wasn't on the list. This was not an issue though and we were still immediately given a table and at this point we were happy. The service was slow with regards to taking our orders however the food was really good. Towards the end of the meal the service became extremely poor. We had asked for the bill, then we were asked whether we wanted any more drinks by another waitress. We asked her for the bill as well then after waiting over 20 minutes asked for the bill a third time. Someone who appeared to be a manager brought the bill over and apologised but then after waiting a further 20 minutes for the card machine to be brought to us. In the end we gave up and went to the desk. On the way to the desk we asked where we pay and the colleague just said it's at the front.

Great place for a drink, fancy meal, corporate event, wedding etc. Lovely, stylish and very comfortable with great service. I've never been disappointed with the food. The new accommodation which has recently been built a stone throw away from the main building takes this place to the next level, the rooms are totally stunning and reasonably priced too.

Waited 10 minutes for waitress to take drink order, this was after 2 waitresses had walked past us and never asked us. We then ordered our drinks with the drink waitress who then informed us a separate waitress would take our food order. I asked if that was going to be another 10mins. At this point two other diners told the waitress they had waited 45mins for their starter an there empty plates have been on the table for 10 minster, and couple who came in after them was just finishing their main course. I cancelled the drinks and left. Dreadful service.
