What an amazing pub! Friendly welcome, warming atmosphere. Two small bar areas makes for a cozy time. House beer from Brass Castle is a tasty drop. Be mindful of the ‘house rules’ though, particularly the one about no groups.
Wow! What a gem. So many pubs these days are bland and sterile. This one is traditional and cosy. Beer is great. I had two pints of Landlord, both crisp and cool.
Purported to be the smallest pub in York, it's a place full of character, and we received a warm welcome. The interior is listed, so can't be altered, which is great, as there aren't many pubs like this left. If you want something historical, something different from the many faceless modern chain pub decors, give this place a visit. Groups aren't allowed, nor are noisy mobile phone users. There are two small rooms with the serving area in the middle, and a passageway to the side with a serving hatch. Theres also an outside patio area at the front. Talking to a local, the pub was forced to modernise the toilets by the Council in order to keep their licence, but before that, the toilets were apparently a bit of an "attraction" themselves, being outside, where you could well find snow in the winter. Both rooms would seem "full" with half a dozen people in, hence the "no groups" rule. Beer was good, also the pork pies. Photo is from the side serving hatch. Definitely worth a visit.
LOVE this place! Best pub in the U.K., as far as I'm concerned. Really enjoyed our chat with Dave and Max!
Me and my family have been visiting this wonderful pub these last 45 years. The Blue Bell is all that historic and beautiful York represents, distilled in a glass and served with simple style and a nice pork pie on the side if you're lucky. Great beer in a real drinkers in a good, friendly, pleasantly communal way public house.
Quirky, tiny pub with a great old traditional feel. Good range of ales on offer..
A wonderful "proper" pub in York. Two small rooms served by a central bar. Good range of ales very well kept. Because of its small size it does welcome large groups, but if you can get in the staff are very friendly and helpful. On of my favourite spots in York which is a city blessed with many great pubs.
Don't get caught with your phone! Enjoy the atmosphere, the pies, the excellent selection of ales and the fantastic building itself.
What a beautiful surprise this was. A very eccentric and lovely place. This was only beaten by the lady behind the bar and the excellent choice of beverages. From the moment you land until the second you leave, it feels so welcoming
Great traditional pub with well kept real ale spread over two cozy rooms.
