St. Thomas' Hospital

Story

Evelina London Children's Hospital is a specialist NHS hospital in London. It is administratively a part of Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust and provides teaching hospital facilities for London South Bank University and King's College London School of Medicine. Formerly housed at Guy's Hospital, it moved to a new building alongside St Thomas' Hospital, which opened on 31 October 2005.HistoryThe hospital was founded in 1869 by Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild, whose wife, Evelina, and their child had died in premature labour. It was established in a purpose-built hospital in Southwark Bridge Road, Southwark, opposite what was originally the headquarters of the London Fire Brigade at 94 Southwark Bridge Road. It was nationalised in 1948, becoming a branch of Guy's Hospital. In 1976 the original hospital building was closed, and the children's wards were moved to the newly built Guy's Tower.New hospitalIn 1999 a decision was made to re-establish Evelina Children's Hospital as a new specialist hospital for all children's services at Guy’s and St Thomas', on the site of a former nurses' home. An architectural design competition was managed by RIBA Competitions and won by Hopkins Architects and engineers Buro Happold. Davis Langdon provided quantity surveying and employer's agent services. Construction began in 2002, and the building was completed in 2004, ready for fitting out. This is one of the few hospitals in the world to be built not around the doctor's perspective, but around the patient's. The building won the IStructE Award for Education or Healthcare Structures in 2006.

I gave birth at St Thomas' Hospital 2 days ago and had an exceptional experience. The maternity staff were incredibly helpful, and the team of midwives and the anesthesiologist were amazing. Their professionalism and care made a significant difference during my stay. I am deeply grateful for their support and would highly recommend St Thomas' Hospital for maternity care especially Heidi Beaven who delivered our newborn and Kate who covered the earlier shift.nnI am so very grateful that we switched from the Royal London!
The maternity unit has been outstanding. Every member of staff has been a true credit to their profession. From my very first midwife appointment all the way through to my time in post-natal, it has been fantastic. I had a little trouble with delivering my baby ans the afterbirth and the staff couldn't have been more supportive. They were also extremely thorough checking up on me afterwards with a range of tests and explanations of exactly what my complications were. Thank you so much to the wonderful staff.nnAnd I must add the beautiful view from my post-natal ward.
We went to the St. Thomas hospital A&E yesterday to get our mother treated for her an injury in her wrist, we were attended by Dr. Chad Parkes who first made our mother feel comfortable who was screaming with pain and then gave her right treatment and advise. Highly appreciate the time and attention doctor dedicated to listen to our mother patiently and diagnose her properly before starting the treatment. There was no haste at all and it was amazing to see that all the staff and the doctor were available to answer our endless questions. Thank you so much for the needed support!
Amazing! First of all, the receptionists at the maternity unit need to be a lot more friendlier and welcoming. Everytime I’ve gone there, they have always been a bit cold, blunt and rude which I don’t like considering the fact I’m in pain.nnAnyway, the MIDWIVES, were amazing. Particularly Sophie, Rea and Suki. I just want to thank them in particular because they were so patient and kind with me. Even the other midwives i saw briefly, Shekilah - so warm and kind. The rooms were amazing and I just really am thankful for you all. You really made my birthing experience a good one :
I gave birth in March this year and had a negative experience in the Labour Ward at St Thomas’. I had a smooth, low risk, easy pregnancy and hoped for a vaginal delivery. I was very fit and well, but when I was over a week past due I was induced. I had a mean midwife who denied me pain relief apart from some paracetamol during my 9 hours of strong contractions. No gas or epidural though I asked and my partner asked for me. The midwives and doctors kept asking questions and demanding answers while I was debilitated with pain. I could hardly think let alone respond. They wouldn’t wait to speak to me in between contractions. After 9 hours I became distressed and baby got distressed, so they suggested a caesarean. During the operation the surgeon carelessly cut my bowel which then required internal stitches. I was left in extreme pain for over two months after birth making it very hard for me to look after my baby and to breastfeed. I haven’t received a satisfactory explanation for how this could have and why this happened to me nor an apology.nnMy experience in the postnatal clinic was good. I received empathy and care from the midwives there.
