St. Thomas' Hospital

Story

Evelina London Children's Hospital is a specialist NHS hospital in London. It is administratively a part of Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust and provides teaching hospital facilities for London South Bank University and King's College London School of Medicine. Formerly housed at Guy's Hospital, it moved to a new building alongside St Thomas' Hospital, which opened on 31 October 2005.HistoryThe hospital was founded in 1869 by Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild, whose wife, Evelina, and their child had died in premature labour. It was established in a purpose-built hospital in Southwark Bridge Road, Southwark, opposite what was originally the headquarters of the London Fire Brigade at 94 Southwark Bridge Road. It was nationalised in 1948, becoming a branch of Guy's Hospital. In 1976 the original hospital building was closed, and the children's wards were moved to the newly built Guy's Tower.New hospitalIn 1999 a decision was made to re-establish Evelina Children's Hospital as a new specialist hospital for all children's services at Guy’s and St Thomas', on the site of a former nurses' home. An architectural design competition was managed by RIBA Competitions and won by Hopkins Architects and engineers Buro Happold. Davis Langdon provided quantity surveying and employer's agent services. Construction began in 2002, and the building was completed in 2004, ready for fitting out. This is one of the few hospitals in the world to be built not around the doctor's perspective, but around the patient's. The building won the IStructE Award for Education or Healthcare Structures in 2006.

The maternity unit has been outstanding. Every member of staff has been a true credit to their profession. From my very first midwife appointment all the way through to my time in post-natal, it has been fantastic. I had a little trouble with delivering my baby ans the afterbirth and the staff couldn't have been more supportive. They were also extremely thorough checking up on me afterwards with a range of tests and explanations of exactly what my complications were. Thank you so much to the wonderful staff.nnAnd I must add the beautiful view from my post-natal ward.
At the Eye emergency Unit.nnToo slow! 3 hours waiting already and I’ve only been assessed by a nurse. Heaven knows when a doctor will see me!nnDon’t come unless too strictly deadly necessary!nnDisappointingly slow service for not so many patients. Painful
Aug2023- large open unlike hospital I've seen. Went to research block.nWalk through wide corridor with mosaic tiled walls and scenes of nursery rhymes and storiesnCosta, M&S, shopping, cinema and a hairdresser. Very well equipped for visitors and patients.nLovely statues of dignatories, royalty, and medics including Nightingale and Seacole.nRestaurant is good looking too.nWonderful archive and history walking through the areanTwinsUK staff were lovely 10/10
Outstanding hospital, I’ve had some bad experiences so always apprehensive about going to hospital but I had to go for an MRI and the doctors had all the time in the world for me, my questions no matter how daft and where extremely accommodating - going above and beyond for me to give me as much peace of mind as possible.nnThis is the same hospital that my Grandad flat lined at after a major heart attack but they somehow managed to bring him back to life for him to live many many more years and to still be with us today.nnThey’re doing gods work here, we are so blessed to have them in our times of need. Thank you all for what you do on a daily basis.
Had to come here as I had a slight problem with my heart, I explained to the triage nurse that I couldn't come on the day my doctor sent me as I was suffering from avian flu and a chest infection, she said I SHOULD of attended as something might have happened, I told her ' your sign outside said if you have flu symptoms you should not attend the hospital ' she cut me such a filthy look, she should know that avian flu is highly contagious and can be passed on very easily and quickly. This nurse needs a lesson in manners and should know her job. The staff in the heart suite were brilliant and very helpful, shame the triage nurse wasn't !
