St. Thomas' Hospital

Story

Evelina London Children's Hospital is a specialist NHS hospital in London. It is administratively a part of Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust and provides teaching hospital facilities for London South Bank University and King's College London School of Medicine. Formerly housed at Guy's Hospital, it moved to a new building alongside St Thomas' Hospital, which opened on 31 October 2005.HistoryThe hospital was founded in 1869 by Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild, whose wife, Evelina, and their child had died in premature labour. It was established in a purpose-built hospital in Southwark Bridge Road, Southwark, opposite what was originally the headquarters of the London Fire Brigade at 94 Southwark Bridge Road. It was nationalised in 1948, becoming a branch of Guy's Hospital. In 1976 the original hospital building was closed, and the children's wards were moved to the newly built Guy's Tower.New hospitalIn 1999 a decision was made to re-establish Evelina Children's Hospital as a new specialist hospital for all children's services at Guy’s and St Thomas', on the site of a former nurses' home. An architectural design competition was managed by RIBA Competitions and won by Hopkins Architects and engineers Buro Happold. Davis Langdon provided quantity surveying and employer's agent services. Construction began in 2002, and the building was completed in 2004, ready for fitting out. This is one of the few hospitals in the world to be built not around the doctor's perspective, but around the patient's. The building won the IStructE Award for Education or Healthcare Structures in 2006.

We are deeply grateful to St Thomas’ Hospital, Lambeth, where our grandson was born recently by C-section. The doctors were highly professional, and their careful assessment and reassuring approach gave us great confidence. The nursing staff were truly exceptional — caring, attentive, and always ready to help with kindness and patience. It is clear that patient care, safety, and comfort are given the highest priority.nnThe hospital is clean, spotless, and very well managed, reflecting the high standards maintained throughout. Every member of the team made us feel safe and supported during this precious moment for our family.nnOur heartfelt thanks to the doctors, nurses, and the entire staff for their excellent service and compassionate care. They have given our family a beautiful and memorable beginning to our grandson’s life, and for that, we will always remain grateful.
I would like to express my sincere thanks to the amazing team at St Thomas’ Hospital.nnMy name is Hussain Sardar. I was referred from King’s College Hospital, Denmark Hill, after I broke my arm in an accident. I had surgery yesterday, and I cannot thank the staff enough for the excellent care I received.nnThe nurse who looked after me before my operation was incredibly kind, caring, supportive, and professional. She treated me with so much compassion that it felt like my own mother was caring for me. She made me feel calm and safe during a very stressful time. Her dedication and kindness truly impressed me, and she is an outstanding example of what nursing should be.nnThe doctor who performed my surgery was also exceptional. He was highly professional, knowledgeable, respectful, and explained everything clearly. He spoke to me with kindness and treated me with such care that it felt like a father looking after his son.nnI came to the hospital alone, but because of the kindness and compassion shown by the staff, I never felt alone. Everyone made me feel respected, cared for, and supported throughout my treatment.nnThank you to everyone at St Thomas’ Hospital for your outstanding care and professionalism. I will always be grateful for everything you did for me.
nExceptional care every timenSt Thomas’ Hospital is truly outstanding. All four of my children were born here, and each delivery was calm, professional, and incredibly supportive — the maternity teams made my partner feel safe and reassured throughout.nThe A&E department is the fastest and most efficient in London, with exceptional care from doctors, nurses, carers, and all staff. The hospital is also spotlessly clean and extremely well organised, which makes a huge difference.nA hospital we trust completely and will always be grateful to. Thank you to every single member of the St Thomas’ team — you are amazing.
A special shout-out to Michelle on William Gull Ward, Steph on Beckett Ward, and Katja on the Admissions Ward at the St Thomas - Westminster.nnThese ladies are true lifesavers and absolute Amazons. They are knowledgeable, compassionate, professional, and genuinely care about their patients. No matter how many times they were called, they never made me feel like a burden or an inconvenience. They always responded with kindness, patience, and understanding.nnTheir dedication, expertise, and positive attitudes made a difficult hospital stay much easier to cope with. They clearly love what they do, and it shows in the exceptional care they provide every day.nnThank you, Michelle, Steph, and Katja, for everything you do. You are a credit to your wards and to the NHS.
On the night shift of 15 June 2026, I attended the Emergency Department at St Thomas’ Hospital while suffering from severe chest pain, ongoing pain on the left side of my body, and serious physical distress following multiple accidents. I came to the hospital expecting urgent medical care, professionalism, and basic human compassion.nnInstead, the behaviour and attitude I experienced from a member of staff at reception left me shocked, humiliated, and deeply upset. I felt dismissed, judged, and treated as if my pain and medical condition did not matter. At a moment when I was struggling physically and emotionally, I was made to feel unwelcome rather than supported.nnI strongly believe the conduct and attitude of this night-shift staff member were the main reason the situation became so distressing and emotionally damaging for me. What should have been a place of care and safety instead became an experience that increased my anxiety, pain, and loss of trust.nnNo patient attending an Emergency Department in severe pain should ever feel ignored or pushed away. Hospitals are supposed to be safe places where vulnerable people receive care and respect, regardless of who they are or what condition they arrive in.nnI fully understand that NHS staff work under pressure, and I appreciate the hard work many healthcare workers do every day. However, professionalism, empathy, and respectful communication are essential responsibilities in emergency care. What I experienced fell far below the standard of treatment and humanity I expected from one of the UK’s major hospitals.nnThis experience has seriously affected my trust and confidence in the care I received. I hope this matter is reviewed properly so that no other patient in pain is made to feel the same way again.
