St. Thomas' Hospital

Story

Evelina London Children's Hospital is a specialist NHS hospital in London. It is administratively a part of Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust and provides teaching hospital facilities for London South Bank University and King's College London School of Medicine. Formerly housed at Guy's Hospital, it moved to a new building alongside St Thomas' Hospital, which opened on 31 October 2005.HistoryThe hospital was founded in 1869 by Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild, whose wife, Evelina, and their child had died in premature labour. It was established in a purpose-built hospital in Southwark Bridge Road, Southwark, opposite what was originally the headquarters of the London Fire Brigade at 94 Southwark Bridge Road. It was nationalised in 1948, becoming a branch of Guy's Hospital. In 1976 the original hospital building was closed, and the children's wards were moved to the newly built Guy's Tower.New hospitalIn 1999 a decision was made to re-establish Evelina Children's Hospital as a new specialist hospital for all children's services at Guy’s and St Thomas', on the site of a former nurses' home. An architectural design competition was managed by RIBA Competitions and won by Hopkins Architects and engineers Buro Happold. Davis Langdon provided quantity surveying and employer's agent services. Construction began in 2002, and the building was completed in 2004, ready for fitting out. This is one of the few hospitals in the world to be built not around the doctor's perspective, but around the patient's. The building won the IStructE Award for Education or Healthcare Structures in 2006.

Best hospital I’ve received treatment at.nAfter originally being misdiagnosed at another hospital resulting in me nearly loosing my finger, I finally got transferred here and I couldn’t thank this hospital enough!nEveryone made my traumatic experience slightly better by how caring, friendly and accommodating they were.nSpecial thank you to the plastic surgery surgeon who came to A&E and basically saved my finger and also the nurses on the plastic surgery ward who made me feel better.nThe views from this hospital over London also really cheered me up when I was feeling very poorly.
I gave birth at St Thomas' Hospital 2 days ago and had an exceptional experience. The maternity staff were incredibly helpful, and the team of midwives and the anesthesiologist were amazing. Their professionalism and care made a significant difference during my stay. I am deeply grateful for their support and would highly recommend St Thomas' Hospital for maternity care especially Heidi Beaven who delivered our newborn and Kate who covered the earlier shift.nnI am so very grateful that we switched from the Royal London!
St. Thomas's Hospital has a dedicated and compassionate staff that provides exceptional care to its patients. We are fortunate to have access to free medical care in our country.
I recently had an experience at the Early Pregnancy Unit at St. Thomas’ Hospital, and I cannot speak highly enough about the care I received. From the moment I walked in, every single employee was exceptionally kind, compassionate, and professional. The nurses, doctors, and reception staff all went above and beyond to make me feel supported and at ease during what can be a challenging time.nnTheir level of care, both medically and emotionally, was truly outstanding. They took the time to listen to my concerns, answer all my questions, and made sure I felt comfortable every step of the way. I was treated with such respect and empathy, and it was clear that everyone in the unit genuinely cared about my well-being.nnThe team created a warm and welcoming atmosphere that made a huge difference in my experience. I am so grateful for their dedication and would highly recommend the Early Pregnancy Unit at St. Thomas’ to anyone in need of care. The kindness and professionalism of the staff made all the difference, and I cannot thank them enough!
