Evelina London Children's Hospital

Story

Evelina London Children's Hospital is a specialist NHS hospital in London. It is administratively a part of Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust and provides teaching hospital facilities for London South Bank University and King's College London School of Medicine. Formerly housed at Guy's Hospital, it moved to a new building alongside St Thomas' Hospital, which opened on 31 October 2005.HistoryThe hospital was founded in 1869 by Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild, whose wife, Evelina, and their child had died in premature labour. It was established in a purpose-built hospital in Southwark Bridge Road, Southwark, opposite what was originally the headquarters of the London Fire Brigade at 94 Southwark Bridge Road. It was nationalised in 1948, becoming a branch of Guy's Hospital. In 1976 the original hospital building was closed, and the children's wards were moved to the newly built Guy's Tower.New hospitalIn 1999 a decision was made to re-establish Evelina Children's Hospital as a new specialist hospital for all children's services at Guy’s and St Thomas', on the site of a former nurses' home. An architectural design competition was managed by RIBA Competitions and won by Hopkins Architects and engineers Buro Happold. Davis Langdon provided quantity surveying and employer's agent services. Construction began in 2002, and the building was completed in 2004, ready for fitting out. This is one of the few hospitals in the world to be built not around the doctor's perspective, but around the patient's. The building won the IStructE Award for Education or Healthcare Structures in 2006.

The design is very child senory bright snd colourful. We had a 16-minute walk from Water East train station it was literally a straightforward walk. The hospital is well signposted once you enter. They have used a water theme and different receptions, and departments have a unique name. Once inside, the first thing that stands out is the theme, toys, and play areas. It does not look like a hospital, so you can see children being excited to attend. We were seen by 2 different staff, both friendly and welcoming. We had to use a translator and just a quick call someone connected. We also attended the blood centre walk-in service, which was across the compound.
Whilst their medical care is good to great, their customer service capabilities are incredibly useless. I got rebooked all the time for midwife appointments which I typically can make luckily I have an office job that allows me to be flexible. However, my appointment in 5 days got rescheduled for tomorrow but I can’t make it since I’m out of the country. I have been for an hour waiting to speak to them to update them on this, but when I got to be first in the queue, the call just ended. Very very very poor, have absolutely zero agency over your scheduling and no ability to communicate online.
A place rich of people willing to help with a smile. We were amazed by the quality of the service and the dedication, humanity and professionalism of nurses and doctors working there, despite the daily challenges
Amazing hospital! We went here twice already because for my daughters allergy test. The first time was just the skin test and the Doctor explained thoroughly the next test to be done. The second time was for asupervised feeding for Shrimp. The place was well kept and clean. And the nurses are amazing. We spent around more than 3 hours since my daughter had to be monitored for any reaction. We were looked after really well and the nurses explained every single thing especially how to use a epipen. Will be coming back to do other tests.
Grounds were lovely hospital was Clean food was lovely and affordable staff so so lovely informative all round great service for me and my son who had operation. Hospital gave us both private lodge over night which was impeccable can't rate this hospital enough . Would have given 5 stars but prior to the op admin and redirected calls wasn't the best.
I don't like leaving negative reviews, but the patient service over the phone has been horrible. I called them last week to reschedule my ultrasound appointment because I will be leaving the country for three weeks on my 12 week mark. They said someone would call back to book, a week has passed and no one has called. Yesterday I was on the line for 1 hour waiting to speak to a human and the line Automatically hung up on me. I called again, and the same thing happened after an hour. I gave up and called again this morning when they first opened up, after 20 minutes, someone picks up and gives me three different contact numbers to reach out to none of which are even working properly and go straight to voicemail. The gentleman proceeds to tell me that they don't do 11 week ultrasounds, And I said "What if someone is leaving the country for a few weeks?" I don't understand why they can't make accommodations. This is my first pregnancy and I am unable to get in touch with anyone to sort this out. I may need to go private to get anything done. Very disappointed in the service or lack there of.
Lovely children's hospital. The set up is great for kids and the staff are really friendly and genuinely caring and obviously great with kids. There is also a decent parents room with free tea, coffee, milk and fridge/freezer and microwave. Only negative was that although the building looks amazing, because it is glass it does get very hot children's ward's are notoriously hot but it was very hot, dread to think what it's like in the summer! Location is good for trains as it's a 5 minute walk to waterloo east station and a 10 minute can ride to London Victoria train station.
I cannot put into words how amazing this hospital is. My newborn daughter, at 9 days old fell critically ill without us knowing. She was born with two heart defects VSD & COA. We rushed her to St Georges A&E due to her not wanting to feed and having to be woken for every feed due sleeping most of the time. She was not urinating, her kidneys were failing and we were unaware. She had turn a mottled purple colour. I knew something wasn’t right. There was no room in the NICU, so she was transferred to the Evelina. The staff in Forest NICU were so welcoming and reassuring, giving us a room to set ourselves up. Explained everything to us in detail and were very understanding. It felt like private care. The cardiology team are astounding. 4lb 8oz and out of surgery, they couldn’t believe how great she recovered. The surgeon quoted her ‘scrappy’. Feisty and determined spirit. If it were not for the amazing team at Evelina, my girl would not be here today. Thank you is an understatement. Our mighty rainbow heart warrior.
Thankfully my boy was discharged yesterday. He is starting to feel much better thanks to the amazing staff at Evelina St Thomas’ Children’s Hospital. Words cannot express the gratitude and sheer awe I feel for the angels who nursed him over the last few days. There is no pay rise high enough that could reflect the recognition they deserve but enough to live on would be a good start. I will never forget their compassion and dedication. Thank you xxx
Always been a fantastic children's hospital wonderful staff helped us stay carm and happy throughout my son's 2 major operations and due to my own disabilities even let me sleep in a spare bed rather than the pull out ones there for parents. Several parent rooms to sit and relax great age appropriate play areas for all children even have a cinema totally carm experience rather than a stressful one. Only downside is for those who do not have a blue badge because the car park can be seriously expensive if your there for a few days.x
