One of the many beautiful baroque churches in London. It is hard to say which is my favorite but this has to be one of them. The volunteer staff are particularly helpful. I will be back for one of the evening concerts. Since I wrote this review, I have been back for a Vivaldi concert which was very special as the baroque interior absolutely fits the music as they are contemporaneous. A very special experience.
This beautiful 18th century Church has been brought back to the public through the pedestrianisation of The Strand by Somerset House. Previously, it had sat in the middle of a very bust thoroughfare, and it was difficult to appreciate this beautiful church. There is now public seating by the church and Somwrset House, so you can take time out and appreciate this beautiful building. The church is surprisingly small inside, but well worth taking time out to visit.
I watched a piano recital in this beautiful church last night. It wasn’t the best venue for a piano recital with a small orchestra. I could only see one or two heads of the orchestra members and couldn’t see any part of the pianist or piano. It was actually more enjoyable just to close my eyes and listen, as there was barely anything to see. The performance skills of the pianist and orchestra however, were first class. The pews were rock solid wood, which was incredibly uncomfortable for a long performance. There was no padding. I noticed that there were kneelers, which some people had used to pad the seats, but they were bulky and not ideally suited to the pews as they were designed to be kneeled on. It would have raised me up, which would have meant that I could have seen more, but it would have been unfair on the people behind. There was a loud demonstration going on at the gates of King’s College outside, which included drumming and shouting, which sadly spoiled the overall performance for me, and was a shame for the performers. The building acoustics were lovely, but spoiled by the other things I’ve mentioned. I won’t bother going to any further performances at this location.
Beautiful Anglican church Grade I Listed - Baroque in architectural design, built 1714-1724. It now stands in the pedestrianised area in the Strand. It has regular opening times for prayers. I saw a virtuoso pianist concert. The acoustics were good. The seats are in need of a bit of care and uncomfortable for a long performance.
Beautiful little Parish church by Temple. Since they made up the surroundings you can sit on the benches outside the church. Really pretty blue stain glass windows will draw you in. Don’t forget to look up, the ceiling is a masterpiece
I recently attended a piano concert where "Clair de Lune" was performed, and it was an unforgettable experience. The pianist delivered a stunning rendition of Debussy's masterpiece, capturing every nuance and emotion with remarkable skill and sensitivity. The performance was deeply moving, and the acoustics of the venue enhanced the ethereal quality of the piece. The atmosphere was serene, allowing the audience to be fully immersed in the music. The concert overall showcased a range of beautifully executed pieces, but "Clair de Lune" was undoubtedly the highlight. I highly recommend attending if you have the opportunity; it's a truly enchanting experience
One of London's most iconic and beautiful churches - and rather underrated. I was shocked to discover that masonry has been falling from the roof and part of the church has been fenced off outside with the most unsightly plastic fencing - sort it out, C of E!
We listened to The Lark Ascending and Tchaikovsky's Serenade for Strings at St Mary Le Strand Church. It was amazing! The Piccadilly Sinfonietta were wonderful and the soloist Martyn Jackson was brilliant. St Mary Le Strand is a beautiful church and a perfect setting for the candlelight concert. Highly recommend.Visited onWeekendWait time10–30 minReservation recommendedYes
Concert was so enjoyable. Only issue was how hard the wooden pews were. I would go again but look for a different venue.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedYes
A spectacular church. I was impressed with the details and the cosy environment. Make sure you look up, or ask for a mirror and take in the minute workmanship. St Mary Le Strand Church will be a must-see site to visit when in London. I love the pew, however, the current refurbishment may mean it will be lost to make the space more agile for different functions.
