Temple Church

Story

The Temple Church is a late 12th-century church in the City of London located between Fleet Street and the River Thames, built by the Knights Templar as their English headquarters. During the reign of King John (1199–1216) it served as the royal treasury, supported by the role of the Knights Templars as proto-international bankers. It is jointly owned by the Inner Temple and Middle Temple Inns of Court, bases of the English legal profession. It is famous for being a round church, a common design feature for Knights Templar churches, and for its 13th and 14th century stone effigies. It was heavily damaged by German bombing during World War II and has since been greatly restored and rebuilt. The area around the Temple Church is known as the Temple and nearby formerly in the middle of Fleet Street stood the Temple Bar, an ornamental processional gateway. Nearby is the Temple Underground station.HistoryConstructionIn the mid 12th century, before the construction of the church, the Knights Templar in London had met at a site in High Holborn in a structure originally established by Hugues de Payens. Because of the rapid growth of the order, by the 1160s the site had become too confined, and the Order purchased the current site for the establishment of a larger monastic complex as their headquarters in England. In addition to the church, the new compound originally contained residences, military training facilities, and recreational grounds for the military brethren and novices, who were not permitted to go into the City without the permission of the Master of the Temple.

What a ! It wasn't easy to visit as it only opened during the week but it was worth the wait. And the whole area around it is very interesting and beautiful too. I enjoyed having breakfast in the little pocket garden near the church.
Close to the legal district of the City - Lincoln Inns Fields, the Royal Courts of Justice and the Inner and Middle Temples- you will find the Temple Church. I think it's featured in one of the Dan Brown novels. It's a beautiful little church full of the history of the Knights Templar. It's also off the beaten track so for a small fee, you can soak up the history of the Knights. After that, you can stroll around the area which is removed from the hustle and bustle of the nearby streets.
As you walk into this church built by the Knights Templar, you can almost feel its history reaching back into the 12th century. Despite incredible damage in 1941 by a German incendiary bomb, it has been meticulously repaired. You almost hold your breath as you walk among the effigies of some of the most important members of the Templar order, lying here grasping their swords in the stone. I was able to climb up narrow stone staircase up to the triforium and admire the Church’s original Minton tiles, as well as the view of the effigies from the top. This church is truly a hidden gem.
I loved being there, you can feel the history and imagine the times of the templars, and crusaders there. I had an expert finding answers to my questions. Awesome.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
Really well set out history of the church which is so much more than the Da Vinci Code church. It's linked to Magna Carta, American Independence and the direct link to the law at the Inner and Outer Temple.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
It's an amazing burst of history! The Temple church was worth the walk from Temple station. The building is lovingly maintained and the tie between the church and the advancement of the legal profession is fascinating. Definitely go see it and puck up the guide book for added color and details!
Lovely visit to a church steeped in history! If you can go on a day with a guided tour, I highly recommend it as the guides are able to bring some elements of the church to life in a different way. Be sure to pay attention to the Grotesques adorning the nave they are lower down than you may think! and when you go upstairs pay special attention to the wooden door about halfway up it is open, and you can go inside...
The churchs has an entrance price of £5 for adults, well worth it in my oppinion. This is a working church with 11 am Sunday service and Wednesday 6pm Evesong. The church is well laid out with historic information well presented. It's a beautiful place, in the City but hidden away.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
A very modest entrance fee of 5 Pounds did not deter a visit to this very old and holy place. A wonderful example of a Templar church built almost 950 years ago it has stood the test of time and war. The outside courtyard is a very serene place to spend some time, and gives an excellent view of the church and surrounding buildings. A round church with a square transept, it has a number of stone effigies from the 12th and 13th century. Clean lines on the inside and an undecorated ceiling help to focus on the stained glass and burial places. The statues, effigies, and history in this building are absolutely amazing and well worth the visit.
The home of those who created the first laws and wrote the Magna carta. Very historic place and a really nice experience to soak up the atmosphere and the history seeping from the walls. The story of the templer knights is explained in detail on notes on the walls throughout the church.
