From the outside, expectations of this hotel are high. A great, inviting entrance which leads in the reception and bar area. Miserable staff member checked us in. Room on first floor, lift broken. Room was ok, windows haven’t been replaced in about 100 years and as the heating wasn’t working, it was a cold room. This is obviously ongoing as there was a hot water bottle in the wardrobe! Never been to a hotel that provides you with a hot water bottle before! Walls are very thin, could hear everything, especially the terrible singer whole wailed his way toward midnight. Fire alarm went off just as he was finishing, don’t know whether someone did this on purpose to cut his spot short, but there was no fire. Tried to have breakfast in the morning but was told we’d have to wait 20 minutes for a manager to arrive to open the till until we could start eating, as we hadn’t pre-booked. Overall the hotel has potential as it’s in a great location and the bar/restaurant looks great. Sadly that’s where it ends. Better, happier staff, new windows, a working heating system and a makeover of rooms would help! Rooms: In need of new windows!
Friendly team and a nice pub on the ground floor. Rooms need a bit of a facelift, mattresses replaced and there's a bit of a smell in the bathroom. Price for the night was very competitive. Elevator doesn't work and looks like it hasn't for quite some time.Rooms: 3/5
The location is amazing for jewellery quarter and bullring Shopping. Lots of amazing restaurants nearby and the hotel restaurant and bar are fabulous. Set in a lovely square with trees squirrels and an old church. Had a slight room issue but it was sorted for us. Only little thing. Please allow more tea / coffee / milk in the rooms.. ... We are coming back soon xmas shopping. Nearby activities: Great for shopping and eating out. Safety: Hmmm room lock failed.... Couldn't get out... But just one of those things. It happens, got sorted, no stress. Walkability: You can walk to everything you need from here. Food & drinks: Brilliant in and out.
Was really looking forward to staying here, but the room was an absolute letdown. Website quotes boutique hotel, but the room we stayed in was far from that. The blind in the room was broken and didn’t fit window and sadly light came through in the morning. Shower door didn’t close properly, floor was soaking after a shower and a slip hazard. Overall finish in the room was very cheap, worst was the bed- uncomfortable and small, and the mattress was springy. Such a shame, as the hotel from the outside is really beautiful. The bar is nice, drinks reasonable, just don’t sleep here!!
Good location, the rooms are nice but it seems like the walls are made of paper, you can hear everything and everyone can hear you. On the day we left, we got overcharged because we booked on booking.com, and we got the room really cheap, and they didn't know even though they had already accepted the booking and took the deposit.Rooms: 2/5
I didn’t actually get the opportunity to stay here, as the front desk manager refused to check me in because I was traveling with a service dog. This was despite having all necessary documentation. When I informed her that this was both illegal and discriminatory, she deflected and gave me the runaround saying no dogs allowed. I was too jet-lagged to argue further having travelled for over 24 hours. She made no effort to help me find alternative accommodation either. Do not recommend.
This is in a lovely part of the Jewellery Quarter. I have been with friends for cocktails in early evening. We found it lively and it had a great atmosphere.Rooms: 4/5
A hotel of 2 halves: The rooms & the public areas lounge, bar, restaurant & private hire spaces. Located on St Pauls Square, Birmingham. It's simply stunning. Within 5mins walk are several restaurants all excellent. Our favorite - Locanta. Plenty of metered street parking less secure than, but much cheaper than the hotel car park. An NCP is opposite the hotel. Parking is plentiful and like the restaurants, has several price levels. The Hotel entrance conjours up a nice image helped by it's street-side seating. It wouldn't be out of place in London's chic'est areas. The lounge area is very cosily furnished, in dark muted colours giving a strong 'Home' feel. The reception desk is discreetly placed in this space. The building is an old rope factory, with some very clever, period & contemporary design features referencing the buildings past. The restaurant has a school-dining-room appearance & comfort level, the designer might have seen it as a factory canteen look? It's not Luxury. An enclosed terrace which can be opened up is a very nice area, on a balmy summer's evening it Could be a nice place to eat 'n drink. The bar is well stocked & inexpensive. The food is presented well, the menu has an excellent offering of meat, fish, meat-alternative & vegan options. All meals we had were very flavoursome, filling & value for money. The service is a little slow, & a little hesitant at first, but the wait & awkwardness is worth it. Our dinner 1 starter, 2 main courses & a bottle of red wine cost £100 which was competitive in cost & quality with the surrounding restaurants. We did note & check every single table in the entire downstairs area had a 'sticky' surface, which gave the perception of being unclean: the opposite was the case. We think that the 'sticky' is perhaps the cleaning substance in use ... nonetheless this issue should be addressed, otherwise this 'half of the hotel' is almost faultless. Our review of the 'other-half' of this hotel business is based on our experience & sight of only 1 room type. A standard room was all that was available at the time of booking. Potentially excellent security access to the rooms, recognising this is a popular local bar. However, 1 of the 2 doors has a 'lip' & if they are closed in the wrong order, are effectively open to all. This was the case on 7 of 12 uses by us. It was evident that the reception team sat right next to this door never check it it must be a known issue. The staircase chandelier-rope light is stunning. Each pair of saloon-style doors to our room 3 are of poor design: unreasonably narrow, sprung closed, hard to push open & difficult to get through carrying a laptop/work bag & suitcase. The room was almost devoid of colour, a high dado rail with 1 colour below/1 above. 2 plaid-cushions the only colour & the paned-window frame matches the top colour. The design gives no thought to the primary use of a hotel room - to sleep. The contemporary decor is 'hard & cold', after a time it began to feel like a prison cell. It's certainly not conducive to sleep, or relaxation. A large floor-space under a low light could house a table/suitcase stand or ? either would be useful - what is the light there for? If you use wooden window frames, keep them free of dark-mold like those downstairs. The 'double-bed' is very low and small. There's a high, empty shelf unusable in the room. A glass shelf in the bathroom above a small sink, is easy to bump one's face into when if washing it there, hit hands on whilst using the sink. We won't label it dangerous, but it is hazardous. In short, the room designer's ego, clearly superceded the guests comfort & ease-of-use from a guest's viewpoint. It is not a luxury hotel, it is over-priced given the guest room-experience that's on offer. But, the issues could be easily & inexpensively put right. We have mixed feelings, the overnight stay is not good, the public spaces/services are good & the location is wonderful. We might be tempted back sometime, but ...
Went there today for breakfast, and what a total disappointment. They had one lady working and it was quite busy. I ordered eggs royal, and my friend ordered scrambled eggs and salmon. Mine came out within a few minutes, but after almost 10 minutes, the other dish was nowhere to be seen. I sent mine back as it was now cold waiting for his to arrive we came together so we should eat together but a few moments later the waitress returned and asked him how he wanted his eggs cooked. So they hadn't even begun to make his order. When both dishes finally arrived, I had one poached egg and one boiled. This isnt what i ordere so sent it back again i didnt eat it and then complain trying to get a free meal when i raised this with the manager who had begun to help out on the floor who simply took the plate away with no offer of an apology at the time From the sound of it, the table behind has done the same thing. The manager did return, though , offered an apology and covered the bill.... well, my coffee was anyway as I didn't eat the food. My friend got his for free, so it looks like we are off to grab a pastry on the go. He's paying
Terrible. No lift working. Very noisy. Unfriendly staff. Dated room. Quoted £440 for 2 nights when phoned. Paid £240 on Agado. Dirty shower. Black Mould on ceiling. Stained Carpet. Unpleasant electric air freshener. Left after one night as didn't sleep due to hard beds and pillows and noise. Rooms: Dated and dirty
