The staff are so friendly and helpful. We loved the welcoming, cosy atmosphere of the pub and the drinks were much cheaper than anywhere else in the area. It's not pretentious, just good value for money. The rooms were reasonable, if a little dated. However, the views across the Common and the Thames really live up to Turner's painting. We'll be back.
If you want something original and peaceful in a great part of Richmond then this is the place. It is a classic old world hotel and bar. Fiona and Kath are very good and care that all residents and patrons are welcome and cared for. It is not 5 star but we enjoyed our stay and appreciated the authenticity
Have you ever driven past a place for years and then, out of the blue decide to go in and then kick yourself thinking, "I should have gone in sooner"? Well don't pass up this "hidden" gem hiding in plain sight! Food was excellent English Pub classics, head chef Joshua couldn't have cooked a better half chicken or fish 'n chips. Chicken was tender, sauce and gravy delicious, roast veg just right. Fish was battered with the pub ale and mushy peas were perfect! Portion size was generous, and price good value for Richmond. For those who expect name brand drinks, it's all the Pub's 'own label', but that didn't bother us as the drink was excellent and offered a chance to try something new and nice. I wish we asked our barman's name because his service was excellent. He sat us down by the cosy fire, went and got some coal, and didn't mind that we ate where we settled. He was also kind enough to serve us drinks at our table. Food service was excellent, attentive and polite. Regarding décor the Rose of York has a country pub feel without feeling cramped and is well looked after and maintained. I know this is odd to say but for me, with old pubs I walk to the loo with trepidation. However, the Rose of York was very clean and in tip top condition which I know is a bizarre thing to write up in a review but it stood out for me enough to actually comment on. Bravo to staff and management! Keep up the good work and you'll be our new favourite pub, I can't wait to come back to try out the carvery!
Open hearth fire. River views. Spacious. Typically fairly quiet, though this evening a group seem to have made a party booking. Clean wc. Friendly staff. No real ale but Sam Smith's brewery if fairly decent. IMO their stout is superior to Guiness. Ate here once some while ago, it was a traditional Sunday roast dinner and also fairly decent, i.e., better than what's on offer in most pubs in the area. Younger clientele might consider it boring: no music. Underrated, I'd say.
Definitely need a car to get to this place. We went to a service held there after a funeral. Was really very good. Staff was excellent and the finger food spread tge put on was excellent.Service: 5/5
Lovely, English, vegan friendly. Feels like being in an Agatha Christie episode or a P.G. Woodhouse story. Wood panelling and horse paraphernalia all around. Very cosy.
Landlord charged my phone and called me cab to safety after having a gall bladder attack outside. Much appreciated.Rooms: 5/5
An absolute ‘must go-to’ to anyone visiting Richmond or any locals who haven’t tried before! Truly amazing views while eating a truly wonderful traditional carvery al-fresco! Incredible homely environment with wonderfully warm and welcoming staff. Nick and his crew are so pleasant and the food/drink service simply amazing. It’s definitely a Sunday I will be reliving soon! The Rose of a York is a true taste of Richmond - 5*
