The North East Land, Sea and Air Museums (NELSAM), is an entirely volunteer-run transport museum situated on the site of the former RAF Usworth/Sunderland Airport, between Washington and Sunderland, England.
The museum has the largest aviation collection between Yorkshire and Scotland and houses over 30 aircraft and a wide collection of aero engines, as well as the Military Vehicle Museum, formerly based in Newcastle upon Tyne, which holds a collection of WW2 and post war vehicles.
The museum also has a collection of other items such as weaponry, military vehicles, trams & buses, and other historical exhibits. A collection of fire appliances was added to the collection and the North East Electric Transport Trust have been working on preparing their collection of trams ready to open this year.
Special exhibitions cover the WW2 Blitz and 607 County of Durham Squadron Royal Auxiliary Air Force formed at RAF Usworth.
For 2017, a new WW1 Display will be unveiled.

Fantastic visit to the museum with reasonable entry prices (remember this is a completely voluntary run museum!) and a great selection of aircraft, jeeps, helicopters and so much more. One hangar is decorated in the war times decor and literally feels as if you’ve been transported back to that era with some very realistic sounds and noises just as if you were there. There’s an on-site shop selling memorabilia, coffee, tea and snacks. A must visit with very friendly staff on hand 😊

Great museum with some very interesting planes and vehicles. They have a surviving Avro Vulcan here which is the reason alot of people visit. Friendly and knowledgeable staff who are quite happy to tell you about the exhibits and stories of how they got there. Hidden gem amongst the Nissan site, I'll be back soon

Come on Sunderland local authority... This place could be a hidden gem and pull in the tourists as it's full of great things to see, do and read about but... It's looking a bit tired and unorganised and the day we visited it was absolutely freezing inside the main sheds. I don't think there's any heating at all which led to our visit being curtailed early as we were all freezing cold. It would be a shame if it was a summer only event. Another point is the signage from the main road A19 is confusing. It starts off pointing to The Transport Museum and then later changes to the Aircraft Museum (it's former name). Signage is important due to its somewhat hidden location on the old Sunderland airport. Admission prices very reasonable and guys at reception very friendly. Would help if there was someone going around the exhibits so that visitors could seek help or advice or be given interesting facts. A small tea / coffee shop would go down well especially as some exibits are outdoors but appreciate this would need investment. Overall despite the cold a great place to visit and spend a couple of hours.

It's okay, I decided to come and visit for a few hours and having viewed other museums had high expectations, however when I arrived it felt more like a graveyard then a museum. The airplanes that they had outside such as a Vulcan bombed, and I asked Dudley trident felt like they had been left there to rot, there was no real path and there was very little information on each plane outside. Upon heading into the main hanger there is a good bit of information both about the type of aircraft and then that particular aircraft/artifact. However having been to places like IWM duxford, which I appreciate will have much larger funding and expenditure, there was more in this hanger than you could properly see, mixed with aircraft was engine's from different planes other items and it all made for a very cluttered feel in which I didn't feel you could properly appreciate the exhibits. The rest of the museum was equally disappointing as the clutter seemed to be everywhere and it seemed like everything had been dumped in and has never been looked at since. It's a real shame because with a little attention, restoration to most of the exhibits, and proper planning it had all the parts to be a very well thought out and interesting museum.

Ran by volunteers this place has a fair few planes and copters in, with info alongside most pieces, there's a little shop that sells airfiz models and toys. There's no cafe as I don't think they can afford the licence but you can get a coffee and a chocolate bar. They do hold events here too sometimes and I think there's something coming up in April. Not a bad way to kill a few hours and fairly cheap. There's a nice pub to eat nearby too.
