Segedunum

About

Where Rome's great frontier begins. A Roman museum at the remains of Segedunum 'strong fort' on Hadrian's Wall, overseen by a 35m viewing tower. Gift shop and refreshments available.

Story

A well excavated archaeological site, Segedunum Roman Fort preserves and displays the finds and remains of the original Roman fort and bathhouse where 600 Roman soldiers once lived. You can see parts of the original Hadrian's Wall with an imagined reconstruction too. With a Roman museum exploring the day to day life of Roman soldiers, the frontier in the time of Hadrian and the area's recent industrial past of shipbuilding.
A 35m high viewing tower provides outstanding views across this World Heritage Site and the River Tyne, in a place of great historical significance , both ancient and contemporary.

A fascinating place to visit & view the site of the fort that was built here. The museum is on the ground & first floor. The few staff are very helpful and the admission fee was reduced due to on going repairs to the viewing tower. There is a lift as its on the fifth floor. The views from the huge glass windows provides panoramic vistas of the site and River Tyne both in east & west directions.nnEnjoy the pleasant walk around the site. The actual remains of part of the original Wall can be found opposite the main entrance to the site. It is about 100 m to the west along the main road to Newcastle.
My original review wasn't posted for some reason.nWell worth a visit to see this site, it's really interesting to see how the Romans were very well organised and much further advanced than the English and the Scots.nThe museum is small but really well organised and gives you a great insight into life in that area in that period.nThe shop is also worth visiting, many things for the kids and the coffee is the cheapest in the UK.nThe staff were very friendly and helpful and our dog was accepted without any reservations within the facilities excluding the museum.
I recommend at least to get off Wallsend metro station if passing by anyhow to make a short walk around this very interesting area. See the Hadrian’s Wall and the big Roman fort from the street for free. Read the explanation on the internet to give it more sense search Hadrian’s Wall Wallsend. This can be done in 15-20 minutes. If you are not yet satisfying all your interest, then you could add visiting the museum and get up and close access to the ruins.
Although small, there's a great viewing tower that allows you to see footprint of buildings. And remember, 1000 years history is pretty incredible
I found this to be disappointing, maybe the weather didn't help. We got a half price entry due to the fact they are having building work on the roof. We went straight up the tower which is a novel way to overlook the fort itself, but thought there wasn't really to see. The small museum was disappointing as there wasn't much in it compared to other museums we had been too. Then we went for a walk around the fort, although well excavated it didn't feel as impressive as some others. As this is walls end I thought there would be more there.
