Segedunum

About

Where Rome's great frontier begins. A Roman museum at the remains of Segedunum 'strong fort' on Hadrian's Wall, overseen by a 35m viewing tower. Gift shop and refreshments available.

Story

A well excavated archaeological site, Segedunum Roman Fort preserves and displays the finds and remains of the original Roman fort and bathhouse where 600 Roman soldiers once lived. You can see parts of the original Hadrian's Wall with an imagined reconstruction too. With a Roman museum exploring the day to day life of Roman soldiers, the frontier in the time of Hadrian and the area's recent industrial past of shipbuilding.
A 35m high viewing tower provides outstanding views across this World Heritage Site and the River Tyne, in a place of great historical significance , both ancient and contemporary.

Historically important, but a bit of a let down to me. There are three elements here, an educational center, the well defined excavation and a reconstructed bath house. The educational center is oriented toward children. The view from the tower is the best thing here. It gives an eagle eye view of the excavation. Most of the interesting materials displayed, do not come from this site. The site is tidy and well defined, but all you will see, from above, is the outline of the camp. It is worth a viewing. The bath is closed to the public. When the one standing structure of an entire historic presentation is closed. I seriously downgrade them. I am glad I saw it, if only to know that I didn't miss anything extraordinary.

If you are into English history then you should visit Segedunum. I just loved the chance to start my tour of Hadrian's Wall.

A very interesting museum but it looks a bit half finished. Gives a good impression of the scale of Hadrian's wall.

Disappointed. However the view from the carpark of the famous Tyne side docks is worth a photo.
