I recently visited this museum and since it’s free, that’s definitely a big plus. It makes it accessible to everyone, which I really appreciate.nThe first few rooms felt a bit odd and slightly hard to connect with. I’m not sure if it was the layout or the way the exhibitions were presented, but it didn’t immediately draw me in. There’s also a small library located in the middle of the museum, which felt unusual. It’s more like a mini library, but its placement was unexpected and slightly disrupted the flow.nnUnfortunately, the toilets near the entrance were broken, which led to a medium to long queue. That was frustrating and something that could definitely be improved.nIt was also quite noisy during my visit. There were many children running around and screaming while people were trying to read the displays. I understand that museums are open to families, but it did make it harder to fully focus and enjoy certain parts of the experience.nThere is an indoor humid garden area, which is a nice idea in theory. However, some of the plants looked like they could use better care.nnOn a more positive note, the art on the highest floor was genuinely nice and probably the highlight of my visit.nOverall, it’s worth visiting, especially since it’s free, but there are areas that could be improved to make the experience more comfortable and cohesive.
Came here on a Sunday. The museum is free and has lots of exhibits to explore. I loved the range of art and history. The winter gardens were also so pretty and were decorated with dinosaurs. The cafe is also a great place to stop in. They even had pink slices which weee so delicious. My tuna melt was also very good. Can’t wait to come back again someday and see new exhibits!
A must visit for anyone with curiosity about the past or an appreciation for local history and art. The museum is massive with so much to explore, including interactive exhibitions. Some beautiful free art work tucked away and tons of fascinating displays. Sunderland has such a rich and varied history!nThe Winter Gardens are also beautiful to explore and feel practically tropical tucked away from the city centre. I will definitely return time and time again.
Having not been to the Museum for at least 40 years moved away, it was a couple of hours well spent.nWe only managed the ground floor and winter gardens with a cafe stop, but certainly learned a lot.nApart from being the biggest shipbuilding port at one time, and a big glass industry, who knew Sunderland had such a vibrant and successful pottery industry until the 1950's.nWill definitely return as there's 3 more floors to explore
The garden area is lovely but quite small. There is a very nice goldfish area and beautiful plant life.nnThe museum was lacking in proper boards to explain the exhibits. A lot of it looked like it had been there a long time, but the museum was in good condition and well maintained. I felt a bit bored tbh. The ship collection was probably the best part, the quartz and other crystals were also very nice.nnAs it is free i probably can't complain, but if they charged £5 for entry they could probably refresh some things and make it more interesting.nnThere is no parking there.
