Mad Hatter Hotel

About

A marvellous pub and hotel, the Mad Hatter is superbly located for business or pleasure. 30 well-appointed rooms provide the best value accommodation in the Southwark area, while the pub downstairs serves up delicious fresh food and great ale.

Story

Wondering about the name? Well, The Mad Hatter was originally a gentlemans hat factory and shop, making hats such as the famous Bowler, Topper and Boater. The Mad Hatter, of course, was a character in Lewis Carol's "Alice in Wonderland" - which hosts reference to a myth that the glue used in the making of the hat rims contained Mercury. It is said that the Mercury dispersing particles so close to the brain would tamper with the molecules of the mind and therefore send people slightly mad. Thus creating the phrase "mad as a hatter". Now you know!

Spent 7 days here after 3 weeks touring UK and Ireland. What a lovely place to stay! A home away from home, comfortable, clean good size rooms and charming atmosphere. The food at both breakfast and dinner was very tasty. The staff were extremely friendly and very helpful. I would happily recommend this hotel to anyone.Rooms: 5/5
I'd like to start with the positives - the room we stayed in was really comfortable, clean and we both had a good night's sleep. There was a coffee machine in the room, complimentary chocolates and water and little touches like a dressing gown and which really help with making stays away from home feel relaxed. The staff were really friendly and we received a warm welcome when we arrived. The only thing that really let them down was breakfast. Unfortunately we were waiting over an hour and a half for our breakfast in the morning. Half an hour after ordering we asked how long the wait was on food and we were told that unfortunately our order hadn't gone through to the kitchen. The waitress apologised for the wait and offered us a free coffee, unfortunately when mine arrived the cup had lipstick on the outside. I tried to get their attention and then eventually just turned the cup round and drank from the other side. Around half an hour later we overheard another table being told there was an issue and there was a wait on food. We didn't quite catch what was said and when we managed to get the waitresses attention she said that there was an issue with tickets in the kitchen. When we did get our food it was tasty, I think my only comment really would be to just keep all tables in the loop if there's an issue to just manage expectations. We were feeling a bit anxious not understanding what was going on as we had plans in the morning and it just soured our experience a little. We'd definitely stay again and thought rooms and staff were wonderful, just a bit more communication and attention to detail with the service would have made our experience five star.
Perfect place to start a day in London at. Public transport is close and many important sights can be reached by foot. The staff is very friendly and you can actually see that they are a team that enjoys to work together. The rooms are pretty spacious for the money you pay and last but not least the pub is just beautiful and the food really good. When I come back to London this will be the first place to check out for available rooms.
Very nice hotel and pub. It is located as central as it gets. You can reach three different station in five minutes by foot which was really helpful to explore the city. Room has everything you need and is very spacious for London. It may be a bit outdated but we found it charming. We had the breakfast included and were pleasantly surprised. Additionally to a buffet you could order from a menu. Everything was delicous and they had good vegan options as well. The whole staff was super friendly and helpful. Would always book again here
Wonderful cozy hotel above the friendliest pub.We ate all our meals at the pub in the hotel. The food was delicious! The pints of London’s Pride went down easy after a day of walking about London. We enjoyed the friendly staff who went out of their way to make our stay comfortable. Thank you, Sammy, Luke, Mark and Al! Room 301: Rooms: We had a beautiful room on the top floor. Comfortable bed, quiet, clean room. Food & drinks: Highly recommend Chicken, bacon leek pie, Sunday roast, fish and chips, steak and ale pie. Breakfast was delicious too. Beautiful continental breakfast with a sit down full breakfast included with price of room. Delicious!
This place is great! Rooms are nice, prices are very reasonable, staff is extremely friendly and gave us great assistance and suggestions when asked. The location is superb in my opinion, central to all of our wanderings and close to some of the walks by the river. Having the pub below us was great, as they did an exemplary job with their food and we ended up topping off some nights with a nibble and some beer or cider. Give the meat pie sampler a go if that's up your alley. Sammy sp? was clutch with some great suggestions when we got there, including hitting up Birds Hill Coffee Southwark, that spot is a tiny gem. The sandwich place next door is great for a companion grab-and-go meal too!
I wish I could give the Mad Hatter one million stars. Every aspect of my stay exceeded my expectations by a mile, nay 1.6 kilometers! This hotel/restaurant was the highlight of my trip to London. The staff was helpful and kind. They answered my many emailed pre-arrival questions quickly, including providing the closest parking garage. My room was ready early and was huge. There is not air conditioning in the room, but the windows open and a fan was provided, so it was not too hot. Breakfast was included and we could either utilize the buffet or order from a menu—all free! The chocolate croissant from the buffet was so good I’m still eating them in my dreams. I made a reservation for dinner one night and walked in to find my name on a cute little chalkboard on the seemingly best table in the joint. I felt like I was on the A-list or something! It was glamorous! We chose this restaurant in part for their vegetarian options, of which there were many. Our server helped us choose as he was vegetarian himself. The meal was fantastic. The cider on tap was delicious. The STICKY TOFFEE PUDDING CHANGED MY LIFE FOREVER. I was but a girl, ate the sticky toffee pudding, and am now a woman. Thinking about it brings tears to my eyes. I miss you, sticky toffee pudding. I love you. Dear reader, if you haven’t gathered already, you’ve got book this place as fast as you can, like your life depends on it because after staying here you may never be the same again. yes, I’ve been told I’m dramatic
Great location, great room with many free goodies included and great location, nice breakfast with good selection, but most of all, amazing staff and service. Very pleasant and caring people working there, really felt taken care of. Keep up the good work, 10/10Rooms: 5/5
I stayed the night here with my partner on Nov. 6, 2024 and had a fantastic experience! Big thanks to Sami and Mark for being the most gracious of hosts! Our double room was cozy and comfortable, with plenty of space to spread out and excellent amenities. The bed itself allowed us the best sleep we had during our trip to London and was properly spacious. The pub and pies were fabulous, and the breakfast the next morning was the perfect start to our last day in town. Moreover, the location was quite convenient for getting around town via a short stroll to the Blackfriars metro station. Overall, I would stay here again and recommend the Mad Hatter Hotel and pub to our friends. Plus, as big fans of Alice, we thought the décor was all around charming!
Very cosy and nice hotel, close to the Thames. Great location: up to 10 mins walk to several tube&train stations Southwark, Waterloo, Blackfriars. Nice historical building and neatly decorated interior. Good breakfast: menu selection of various British regulars incl. English breakfast plus rich buffet. Bar/restaurant space bery much recommended also for dinner - great pies&mash, fish&chips and desserts. Hope to come back next year!
