Great location. Hotel was clean but quite dated and hotel smealt foisty. Nice comfy bed, however, bathroom wasn't the cleanest. Quite overpriced for the overall quality to be honest. Would not stay again.

I'll kick this off with the dreaded walk from the carpark..felt like I'd participated in the London marathon, and contemplated hitch hiking the walk really took it out of me leaving me dehydrated and woozy, I thought I had reached the hotel after a gruelling trek, I had double vision and was trying to open a door that wasn't there, due to experiencing a mirage. Finally I reached the hotel, although was dubious at first as the hotel looked nothing like the images on the website, I felt like I was intruding on a family home as this building was a shabby terraced house, I had to shuffle in quick as a man outside was feeling my pockets leaving me afraid of being a victim of daylight robbery. Little did I know the real thieves were sat behind the desk of the reception area. Opened the door and the first thing that hit me was a tsunami of stench, I doubled up like I'd been punched in the gut, the odour was like a rotting body rolled up in a rug and stuffed in one of the cupboards. The lady who robbed me from the reception desk noticed my dismay and frowned at me like I had stolen her chocolates, yes folks we had Miss Trunchbal on our hands. She charged me an extortionate price, equivalent to a family car, so I was confident that I would have a pleasant stay, clearly I was fooled. The backbreaking journey continued as there were no lifts and I was offered a sneer instead of assistance with my luggage. The stairs were relentless, each door I opened at each floor just lead to another flight of stairs, I have never suffered with athsma in my life but between the gruesome stench and what seemed like training for climbing Mount Everest I needed an inhaler. Finally I got to my room which appeared to be the roof conversion, and in stead of relief I was over whelmed with discomfort. sweat was pouring from my forehead. Cold, dark, desolate and quite frankly frightening. I felt as though I had been enclosed in a tomb the room was no bigger than a closet. I thought hold up. If I wanted the Harry Potter experience I'd of booked the cupboard under the stairs. the walls were clearly painted by someone who had the shakes, and I'm not sure what the brown stains were splatted up the walls but I'm going to play it safe and say they were tea bag stains, perhaps previous guests found the complementary tea bags as unsavoury as me. The room promised a city view, when I glanced out the window I came face to face with a chimney. I ventured into the bathroom to splash myself with cool water in case this was another mirage, and was confronted with the chokey. There was a whitchety grub brushing its teeth, and beetles raving on the toilet seat, and I don't mean John, Paul, George and Ringo. But hey ho the bathroom was the perfect size for them. In fact as I took a trip around the castle museum I found the prison cells were warmer and more inviting, the final days Dickturpins cel was in better condition. That night I braved getting into bed, the pillows gave me concussion and the quilt was nothing short of a hessian sack, and gave me a bad rash. the mattress was clearly recycled from the 1800's as it had multiple springs protruding through the surface and stabbing my shoulder blades, I woke up in the night due to the thin walls and visitors next door were loudly letting out wind, I panicked because I thought my legs had disappeared- another mirage? Turns out they had dropped down the ditch in the bed, I was practically in a sitting position, this could of been a vertical drop if I wasn't careful. I drifted back into a light sleep where I was plagued by nightmares from being on the ride oblivion, to be disturbed by 9 seconds of an unnecessary fire alarm. I went downstairs for breakfast that morning, only to have my hunger dismissed, they asked me to go out. there was no offer of directions to the nearest cafe, I was left in the lurch. I didn't stay for the final night I bought myself some voltorol to ease the muscle tension because all I gained from this experience, was fatigue, starvation, dehydration and empty pockets.

Beautiful historic building. Second year running I'v came to stay for the Xmas markets and although it was one of the busiest weekends of the year there was little to no noise, even while staying in the front room facing the shambles... Needless to say Iv booked up for another visit next year! Wonderful place with friendly staff, gorgoues food and fantastic location, can't wait to for my next visit!
