Church Street Hotel

About

Inspired by childhood flavours of the North Spain and the Mediterranean, the Angels & Gypsies kitchen offers creative Tapas comfort in the 'Village style'.

Story

In keeping with tradition, everything is prepared from scratch on site, using fresh , wholesome, seasonal ingredients; from the organic sourdough baked daily to the house made ice cream churned with Neal’s yard cream there is nothing bought in frozen or processed from another kitchen.

Driven by the passion for quality produce, food and drink ; small independent producers and suppliers are utilized whose emphasis is on quality produce , provenance and traceability.

Wild dayboat fish, seasonal organic vegetables from farms in Kent, rare breed pork feature extensively on our menu while we stringently select our beverage suppliers for quality. Our Cured charcuterie, Jamon, Salichichon, & Lomo are imported directly from Salamanca, Spain.

Angels & Gypsies iexudes a warm pilgrims welcome, as if on the the road to Santiago ; with magical stained glass, Church Pews lining weathered brickwork, a façade of elegant hand painted tiles panelling the bar and majestic iberico Jamons hanging by the window.
A humble retreat to leisurely , sip, taste, eat, banter, experience and absorb the Spanish culture of creative cooking and hospitality.

The hotel has a pink exterior now. My room was located inside the top pointy window. I had a very comfortable stay. Some features that no other comments had mentioned. First, there's no safe in the room, however I found there was a safe assigned to each room at the side of hotel lobby. Second, there were snacks prepared in the Havana Lounge where breakfast was served. Not sure if they're free of charge but it is convenient and thoughtful. Rooms: Well furnished. Lots of desktop to spread your items. Very fluffy pillows. Food & drinks: There are lots of affordable eateries in this area.
My top priorities in choosing a hotel are comfort, cleanliness, safety, location, and cost. This hotel falls short on the first. While it shows A/C for twin rooms, there is none. We were able to get the room to a comfy temp, but only by leaving the windows open. Unfortunately, we were right above a street where at least one pub threw out glass bottles. The last night, the bins were collected and forget sleeping during all of that. They offered an A/C tower, which I asked them to bring up. That never happened. The very narrow stairs can be challenging with luggage as well. The hotel did well on cleanliness and safety. The area has lots of well-rated restaurants, offers a good breakfast and easy bus access. It is about 30 min from the main tourist sites, but that wasn't an issue for me in this case as I didn't want to be in the peak tourist area in August. The shared bathrooms are only shared with 3 rooms, so it felt like we had our own bathroom. Bottom line: temps were in the 90s while we were here and the lack of A/C when the rooms were advertised as having A/C is completely unacceptable. Rooms: The twin bed rooms do not have A/C. Not sure about singles, but certainly don't count on them all having A/C
Terrible experience. Wish I could write a review to say what it was like to stay, but the hotel called the day before my booking to say that they were cancelling my stay due to “maintenance” issues. They said they had no other rooms, and weren’t able to do anything else. Had already booked travel and other activities so now have to find somewhere else to stay last minute after booking this two months ago.
Rooms are always clean and tidy and the front desk service is great, access to a lounge with free tea and coffee and a place to eat dinner makes a massive possitive difference to my stay. Would recommend.Rooms: 4/5
No hot water in a First World city like London?? A basic expectation!!!! The three basic requirements are a warm bed, flushing toilet and a hot shower. Jose could not be bothered to respond to my email. Avoid unless you like cold showers. A very poor customer experience.Rooms: 1/5
A thoroughly awful experience. There is a serious problem with the drains resulting in all sorts of filth bubbling up from the sinks. Thank goodness we weren't booked in for more than one night. AVOID.
Amazing rooms with a very cool layout and lovely and kind staff that was always there and ready to help!! Very clean rooms and the location was great, with a bus stop within 5 minutes and shops all around. I also forgot my charger there and was so anxious about getting this back, but Emma and Sharna were so so helpful Ian’s assisted me in retrieving it,
Room was perfect for just me, really beautiful, clean and comfy. Room also had hair dryer, desk and hangers. Staff were friendly and helpful.Rooms: 5/5
I stayed here for one night and was so impressed with the hotel. It feels like a gem of a find and I would definitely stay again and recommend it to anyone able to use stairs. I booked a single room with a shared bathroom and it was perfect for what I needed it for. The shared bathroom was really nice and was spotless. I met with a local friend in the evening and we really enjoyed using the lounge, which again was spotless, and we enjoyed how casual it was. Breakfast was really tasty, and great if you are vegetarian, there were loads of delicious cakes, yogurts and fruit. The staff were lovely and really helpful.
This hotel is by far the most beautiful hotel I've ever stayed in. It has a Mexican theme and the decor is just outstanding. It's in such a great area - Camberwell. There's great pubs and food outlets nearby. It's only ten minutes to the excellent Kings hospital. The staff are so nice, I've enjoyed talking to all of them, Paige is really lovely. I've had such great conversations with the staff and the customers - I met four great Australians here and some cool Dutch people. Plus I had a great conversation with a gentleman from Oregon USA. So it's invigorating being around people from all over the world. One of the many fabulous things about this hotel is each room has a dvd player and the hotel has a fantastic DVD library so you can take dvds to your room - such a great idea!! The whole place is fully double glazed, the showers are great - the shower gel provided is the best I've ever used and smells lovely. I simply cannot recommend this hotel enough. I've stayed in a huge amount of hotels all over the world, this may actually be the best. Rooms: Outstanding, unparalleled, beautiful decor that genuinely beggars belief. I've never seen decor like it anywhere. Plus each room has a TV and DVD player, so you can borrow their DVDs!!! Food & drinks: The breakfast is £8 and is fantastic. Custard pastries, croissants, toast, cereal, cheese and more. ...it's worth it for the custard pastries alone!
