We visited on a wet Sunday afternoon in February about 4pm and it was half empty. We had feared they were full as the website didn't allow me to book. We had the roast dinner, which was pretty good and enormous, though it could've done with another 30 secs in the microwave. The loos were nice, the staff very friendly. I would go back again.
Tried the Botany Bay for the first time. We had baked brie, white bait and mushrooms for starters and burger and chips for main. Presentation of all the food was good, colourful and appealing to the eye. Service from the staff faultless. The only thing that got annoying was the ding dong of door bells. Not sure what it was all about, but it's quite loud. Baked Brie - There was no crackers/bread with the baked brie and chutney. it's hot and runny, so having something to scoop it onto other than a lettuce leaf or piece of apricot from the chutney would have been nice. Needs toast/cracker/roll White bait - literally no flesh, just literally skin and bones. I've literally given bigger fish treats to my cat from a packet that were fleshly and bigger! As well as putting fatter sand eels as live bait when fishing! Tiny portion for the price, quite disappointing out of all of the starters. Mushrooms - Were OK but nothing to write home about. For mains, we all choose beef burger and chips If you like salty food this is for you! Pre salted skinny, skins on fries which were warm and hard getting crunchier as they cooled. Beef pattie nice, firm not mushy, again salty. 3 tiny cocktail gerkins, bacon not mentioned on the description added to the salty taste as did the cheese. Coleslaw and salsa.. salsa was sweet not smoky to the taste, and the apple and celeriac slaw, not even a fork fill to get a taste. Would rather have the choice to add salt than have it added for us. Good job one of us tasted the food first. Chef/kitchen staff came out and was very grumpy to the bar staff. Not really the place to be grumpy front house. At least take them to one side and have a quiet word. Was surprised to see kitchen staff front of house. We didn't complain about the salt as it looked and sounded like the kitchen staff was already having a tough day without us adding to it! The 3 of us will try it again, as the Sunday Roast was recommended.
Warmly welcomed, choice of table and service within a short time of being seated. Good menu choice and plenty of space between tables. Option to eat outside.
Very nice place. Had a lovely dinner with friends. Staff members were very helpful and polite. Food was tasty as well. Definitely worth visiting
An excellent carvery, driving back from Southampton, popped in for a carvery as we saw the sign. Staff very friendly & helpful. Lovely pub with a lovely carvery, everything was cooked to perfection the beef melted in your mouth. We sat outside in the gardens. Will definitely be back. Highly recommended.
We walked in, very frosty reception. Not approachable at all. Order food to be told sold out, chose another dish to be told sold out. Surely if not available on the menu you should be told when you sit down. Another couple arrived to ask for same meal, why not advise sold out from the start. Food was very average, nothing to write home about at all. Definitely won’t be going back
Absolutely delicious food. Came in totally by random, but brilliant food, badger beers on tap, excellent staff and very dog friendly bring the dog in, they have water, treats and even a dog bed.
We made a stop on our way home from Weymouth on a Sunday afternoon and were welcomed in. There was space for us to eat and enjoy roast dinners with a large array of vegetables including cauliflower and broccoli cheese. Fairly reasonable for £15 with beef, gammon and pork and a vegan option. Too full up for pudding. There were a number of special available if you didn't want roast. Would certainly recommend.
Great pub ,amazing pub loved everything about it ,the food , the staff and the garden. Don't miss this place .
Very expensive for what it is, I am now seeing the £4+ plus beer/lager in exceedingly more locations...hard to believe that when I started in the industry a pint of bitter in a south London pub was the equivalent of about 9p!!!! Albeit this was in 1966. This is a really nicely presented venue, with lots of natural light...unfortunately the views are hardly inspiring...but the place is spotlessly clean, the staff are friendly and efficient, the menu is adequate but quite expensive and they have a large car parking area. Beware if leaving here and heading East towards Southampton...this pub is situated on a VERY busy main road, which means you have to cross the Westbound traffic flow to head East. Caution is advised.
