We stayed last weekend and all I can say is what a lovely comfortable stay it was. The room we stayed in was great, clean, tidy and everything you could need. The bathroom was spotlessly clean and the shower was absolute luxury. We also enjoyed a beautiful meal at the pub which was perfectly cooked and presented. A great selection of ales is available which I believe are brewed on site. In all a great night's stay after a day on the mountains, somewhere we are going to stay at time and time again. Many thanks. Rooms: Very comfortable and cosy Nearby activities: Coniston water and plenty of hiking straight out of the door Walkability: Food & drinks: Great
Stopped off here for a Sunday Roast. Initial impressions were that it hadn’t had a decor job for quite some time, although this added to the charm of the old traditional Lake District aesthetic. The roast was really good, the staff are really friendly and would definitely visit again. My only gripe and the reason for not giving 5 stars is the unavailability to use cash, and being forced the card only take it or leave it policy. Otherwise 5 stars.
I had been really looking forward to having a relaxing meal here, before the end of my visit to Coniston. I arrived at 19.50, to be told, the had finished serving meals. So sadly, never got the opportunity to dine here. As, an aside, this establishment is card only, which could be an issue to some people.
Had a 2 night stay, a very welcoming pub, a great selection of ales brewed on-site, outstanding food but above all, the service of bar staff and waiter/waitresses was exceptional. Would highly recommend Rooms: Comfortable, basic but all we needed Food & drinks: Fantastic breakfasts and had an evening meal. Reasonably priced and excellent quality.
Bliss little pub - I was refused a table in The Crown which is over the road even though I arrived at 4:45pm and the table wasn’t reserved until 8:30pm. So I left and found Black Bull, I’m so glad I did they are very welcoming and they had a table for me which I stayed at all night ordering countless beers with a main and dessert : See you again soon!
LONDON PRICES. I'm really not sure what this pub thinks it is. The bar itself is nice and some staff were friendly. Others however did pull the odd face when customers were out of eye line, which felt unnecessary. I tried a few of their own beers, made in the brewery behind the pub. These were nice, but I have to point out that the prices ranged from £6:50 to £9:00 for one pint. This feels totally unacceptable and blatant profiteering. Whilst Coniston is overly expensive anyway average £5:00 a pint this is by far the most expensive of the 4 central pubs, and far from the nicest atmosphere.
We thought we might be in for a good day when we got the last space in a public car park. Finding the Black Bull was the icing on a good day. Nice atmosphere, good selection of drinks, and the homemade steak and mushroom pie was one of the best I have ever tasted and packed with meat.
Dog friendly traditional pub right in the centre of Coniston, loads of beers/ales from the adjacent brewery.....perfect! We had a couple of bar snacks and they were lovely.Service: 5/5
Stunning pub and a fantastic atmosphere. We enjoyed a simple pint of cider and some chips but easily could of stayed all evening if we weren't driving.Service: 5/5
Lovely place for a drink, but let down by the food. We weren’t allowed to book or sit in the restaurant area as we were under 6 people. Had to sit on little stools in the bar area. The food wasn’t great in quality or quantity, Cumberland sausage was tasteless with undercooked vegetables and roast chicken was dry. Was also very expensive, more than The Crown which was far superior. Adding stars back for the setting - traditional cosy pub with roaring fire and good atmosphere.
