Anchor Inn
"A beautiful character filled 18th Century Sussex countryside pub, with open fire places, seated on the River Ouse. We have a large pub garden, out door bar, and the availability to hire one of our boats during the spring and summer season. Serving homemade, good pub food with a selection of cask, draught and bottled beers and ales. We welcome well behaved dogs on leads, so the whole family can enjoy a day out with us."

A beautiful pub in a beautiful setting. I came with a friend on a glorious Sunday lunchtime and enjoyed some lovely food whilst sitting on the benches watching the very well behaved dogs wander around. We then moved to enjoy an ice cream whilst sitting at the high bar looking out over the river. It felt like I was on holiday! It was fun to watch all the boaters come and go, especially when the English bulldog almost fell in the water, poor thing! I can't wait to return to this hidden gem!
A wonderful pub nestled away. Its very busy and popular but it's got beautiful views, a great boat rental and its chips are very popular. For a lovely day by or on an a river it's the place to come in this part of the south downs.
Nice spot for a chilled out beer or meal, little pricey though. Very nice garden area seating overlooking the river which you can hire a boat for looks like up to 5 people. Recommended
I had been wanting to visit this pub for some time, we picked a lovely sunny day and when we arrived there was not many people so we were able to get a table overlooking the river to enjoy our drinks, it's a very nice picturesque pub that serves food, plenty of parking and boat hire, we went for a short walk along the river bank after, enjoyable day.
One of my favourite places.Sitting beside the river with a drink and Sunday roast.Excellent roast chicken, crispy roast potatoes with herbs, good variety of vegetables and very tasty gravy.Very busy on a Sunday lunchtime, but got a table by the riverside and staff very efficient. The only negative is that the metal chairs weren't very comfortable so didn't stay as long as we had planned.
We were lucky enough to have our wedding reception at the Anchor and couldn't have had a more perfect venue. The staff are the friendliest most attentive people you could want and the venue is just beautiful. Food was incredible and customer service is out of this world. Can't say enough about how great they are as it made our day perfect. Lauren,Toby,Bee et al your are stars.
Our 1st visit to this beautiful pub, the staff were friendly and welcoming and the food was absolutely amazing, the pub sits right by the river and has great views and walks, you can even hire a boat to go and play on the river, we certainly recommend this place and will be going back very soon.
Incredible place … the best time boating on the river .. amazing beer and food couldn’t recommend this enough !! Been a few times over the years, Can’t wait to return .. Lovely friendly staff :
Last Sunday took some family friends who are not local and came down for the day , they wanted something rural and away from tourist spots in Brighton. The drive to The Anchor Inn was idyllic and weather too. Managed a walk in before lunch by the river , worked up an appetite and The Anchor Inn did not disappoint. The menu was varied and everyone loved what they ordered , generous portions and very friendly service . No need to pre book . We sat outdoors enjoying the weather and setting, the garden pub looked beautiful with all the different flowers out in full bloom , family friendly and very relaxing. Not rushed at all. After delicious lunch, we hired one of their boats for an hour , all very reasonable, and had a great time , the punters are friendly too. Returned to their garden pub area , sat by the river and ordered dessert . We all left having had a relaxing and highly enjoyable day out .
A slice of heaven, on a sunny day. Beautiful beer garden and terrace, on the river. Worth knowing about the back terrace if the gardens at the front are already full. Plenty of parking. Great food and drinks and friendly staff. You can paddle/ kayak here from Barcombe Mills Car Park about 2.5 km, or you can walk along the path. There's no official 'getting out spot'/ jetty, and a lot of private land along the way with grazing cattle, so just be mindful of that.
