Service was pretty poor. Seated in the snug with menus but no wine menu. Wine menu arrived at third time of asking after food and drinks orders had been taken ?. Food was average. Potatoes and nut roast overcooked. Beef not great quality, tough in parts. Barely any gravy. Overall quantities were good. Selection of deserts was good, desert wine was lovely. Service generally tardy yet service charge automatically included. The quality of the meal was certainly not value for money for the price paid. I’d have expected to pay half for what was served up in the manner it was served up and whilst the venue was lovely, it’s no excuse for pooor product.
Food was beautifully presented. Very nice and welcoming staff. I had the lamb which was extremely tender & tasty, but overall I didn't think it was worth the £22 price tag. Dessert was wonderful also, and it is a quaint, traditional pub in the middle of the Sussex countryside
I also found the service a bit disorganised at first and I've never liked the rather corporate reception set-up reminds me too much of Covid!, which doesn't really say 'country pub'. That said, once they hit their stride, the staff were friendly and attentive. I thought the food was not only of high quality but also good value - a half shoulder of first-rate local lamb with loads of veg and well-roasted potatoes + Yorkshire for £16pp. That is not expensive for Sunday lunch. Good effort and pleasant environment, with plenty of space outside
Me and my girlfriend stayed for a night for my birthday and it was gorgeous. We had the Birdcage room which had a gorgeous big bed and bath big enough for us both. The food in the restaurant/pub was incredible. When we arrived we had a glass of fizz with a sharing plate of puddings to die for! Our 3 course dinner was exquisite. Honestly, the food was just brilliant. The staff on hen we visited were also really lovely. Very approachable and professional. Ben especially really made us feel looked after and laughed at our jokes even if they weren't very funny.
Such an incredible meal with my family at The Ram. The lovely Italian waiter was so kind and helpful, and I couldn't recommend his service, or the Ram's food enough! Such a great place for a meal, and I loved practicing my Italian with the waiter he is a gem!. We keep coming back -- and for good reason too!
Today I went to have lunch with my son . I have been seriously ill so this was a joy. However we were asked to move from my preferred table, which was pre-booked the day before with a member of staff on the phone. It is my son’s birthday! I have been coming here for 20 years. Firstly being moved ruined my lunch. We were placed in the bar by the kitchen, the door was open and it was very cold. I asked for the door to be shut and the very abrupt waitress said it had to stay open. I asked in that case can you light the fire which used to be a lovely feature of the pub. Again the answer was an abrupt No. The young waitress that did look after us was charming. The food arrived and it was shockingly bad, the mussels were small and over cooked and cold. Simply speaking there was no care or service . The owner was more interested in her dogs than her clientele. I won’t be coming again. To top it all £12.75 for a glass of SB is totally ridiculous. That’s a loyal customer who owns a huge local company not booking his Christmas party! I almost never complain but this was shockingly bad . I am afraid when your dogs are treated better than you fee paying clients, something has gone badly wrong…
I was underwhelmed by the experience. We stayed a night in one of the rooms which was more tired the advertised photos made it look. Food was standard pub food. Best part of the meal was the bread which was sourced from the Flint Owl bakery in Lewes. Staff were friendly but a bit clueless. The experience did not match the steep price tag. Won’t be back in a rush. Dog friendly.
I stayed here with a group of friends for my wedding. The location and building are beautiful, an authentic country pub with log fires burning in the bar, and cute little rooms upstairs. Each room is unique; large, comfortable and well-appointed with fresh coffee, lovely teas, and a cafetière. It’s worth bearing in mind that my room only had a bath, not a shower, and I think the others were the same. That might surprise some visitors although it’s not a huge problem. I was also a little disappointed that after using the cafetière on the first morning, it then wasn’t cleaned when my room was made up, so the next morning I discovered it full of used coffee grains and had to wash it out myself in the sink. The main reason for docking a star, though, was the extraordinarily slow service at breakfast. Both mornings, the cooked breakfast options took well over half an hour to arrive and in some cases I think it was pushing 45 minutes. That seems excessive especially given that breakfasts are usually relatively straightforward and quick. That said, the staff were friendly and doing their best.
Used to be my favourite pub 10 years ago... visit at least once a year. Nice place to sit outside in the sun and enjoy a beer. On a recent visit it finally lost its score overall. For the price I would have expected a steak cooked as requested and exceptional, it was overcooked and the food was just 'ok'. £15 for a pretty bad glass of wine....come on, sort it out, service charge automatically added. Disappointed
We came down to Firle a few weeks ago and were looking for a dog friendly coutry pub to enjoy some lunch on a cold winters day. We have a rather large and anxious GSD that needs to be away from other dogs, so we realise that sometimes this is difficult to be accomodated, I went in to ask and was greeted with an extremely friendly young man who said it wasnt a problem, and a table would be available shortly that would suit us. They were really busy and there were lots of people waiting but they couldnt have been more friendly to us. The table was exactly as we had asked, out of the way from other dogs and right next to a lovely open fire. All of the servers were delightful and the food was exceptional. It is often awkward for us to eat in nice places due to the high maintenence needs of our giant GSD! So to find somewhere as friendly and accomodating as this, made a sometimes difficult lunch outing into one that was highly enjoyable. The locals we spoke to were also so friendly and lovely it just made the whole experience even more 5 star. A true, high calibre, old english country pub which we will be back to visit again soon and one that I would recommend to all.
