We really enjoyed our 6 days in YHA London Oxford Street. We had a quiet, simple but clean room. The showers and bathrooms were tidy as well. The staff at the reception was very friendly and helpful. But of course the main plus was the location parallel to Oxford Street in the very nice Soho neighborhood and though or because? we had booked the room just a few days ahead we got it at a very reasonable price considering where we were.
Very friendly and helpful staff, super price point for the location stayed in a private room - and the size was perfectly fine for a city. Other guests seemed pretty nice, looked like a broad mix of ages groups, and no overnight loud parties. In room sink useful, and the room was clean. The only reason for 4 not 5 stars was the temperamental lift hence a hike to the 5th floor, and the broken wifi.
Stayed here for four nights as opposed to getting a hotel because the reviews were so great. Overall the experience was just fine. Pros: Location is great. Staff is there around the clock and they offer A LOT of items for purchase which was nice mainly beverages but a great selection. The showers were pretty decent, and having a sink in my room helped because there aren't sinks in the rooms with the showers and the ones in the toilet rooms would not have been sufficient. Washer and dryer on site helped to get wrinkles out of my clothes. Cons: The biggest issue I had was probably the room and the toilets. I had a full size, single room. It was pretty cramped. Being there in late September where the weather outside stayed consistently 65-70 degrees, the room was constantly hot with no flowing air. The room came with a fan but it was loud and even the lowest setting was too extreme, mainly due to speed combined with the tightness of the room. The pillows were phenomenal but the bed itself was a bunk bed twin on the top, full on the bottom. They removed the mattress from the top bunk, and the bottom was just two twin sized mattresses pushed together separate fitted sheets. I could feel the bars of the bunkbed through both mattresses. Also, it was just the fitted sheets and a comforter, so it was difficult to find a good medium comfort because the comforter was too much but the fan was too loud and harsh. The rooms with toilets separate from the showers were VERY tiny and VERY hot. Left sweating every time. The hallway also kept a funny smell. The WIFI didn't work any time during my four day stay. I did ask the front desk on my first day if it was out or if it just never worked to which she replied that they were "coming to fix it the next day". I felt as if that was just something they tell people and turns out it ended up never working, had to purchase extra roaming for my phone. One thing I didn't see mentioned was the amount of stairs. Lots of stairs if you don't want to wait for the elevator which took forever to arrive. I ended up using the stairs each time. 3 or 4 flights to reception, another 2 to my room. Key cards don't work well. Sometimes took up to a minute to get the reader to acknowledge it. I am not a needy or particular traveler so this stay was fine for me, nothing really worth complaining about to the front next because I don't think there would have been a solution to any of these issues. They provided all the basics, just none of real quality, so I didn't bother taking any issues up with them what are they going to do, Replace my mattress? Install new card readers? expand their bathrooms? However, I likely would not book again.
I had a great time staying here for six nights! The location was excellent, right close to several tube stations and parks and places to eat as well as not far away from major attractions. The room was cramped, but at least there were only 4 beds in it rather than the big loud rooms I've had at other hostels! The kitchen was also cramped with not much space to store food. However, the communal spaces were big and open, and the staff were super friendly. There were a few families staying here while I was there who seemed like they liked it too. Everything was clean and it was definitely good value for money. I'd choose to stay here again!
Overall I had a positive experience at YHA but there were some things that could be improved upon. The positive is the rooms were well sized and clean with ample, lockable storage. The sink in the room made us less dependent on the hallway bathrooms which were almost always open. The main negative was that the hallway did not smell good at all specifically near the bathroom areas even though the bathrooms themselves were fine. The shower also wasn’t the best experience, every 30 seconds the water would get piping hot for a few seconds, then cool for a few seconds, then back to normal. The shared bathrooms were also quite cramped. I wish the window would have opened more it got a bit warm at night even though we had a fan in the rooms. The location and price made this hostel great value and if the few complaints I have could be fixed then I would for sure recommend it to those staying in London.
I found the location of this hostel to be perfect, it was close to the theatre shows, walking distance to nearly everywhere or along the way, and close to easy to navigate tube stations. The staff were lovely and never had any issues with them. That’s about the only positive though, I found the rooms to be insanely tiny, the bathrooms to be disgustingly dirty and smelly and the showers had zero shelving and only 2 had minimal hooks to hang clothing on. The showers went from boiling hot to freezing cold. The rooms were boiling hot and the windows barely open, even with a fan I felt like I was dying and I have travelled in hotter parts of the world than this. Ventilation was non-existent. The beds were very noisy with plastic mattresses, but I understand why they have them. Not worth the price in my opinion as I then stayed at a cheaper yet larger hostel the next week.
The room was uncomfortably hot, even with cool night temperatures between 12-19°C. Woke up several times during 3 night stay. The lack of ventilation made it difficult to cool the room down. A fan provided was powerful yet extremely noisy making it unusable as it could wake up everybody. Can‘t imagine how it would be in hot summer. I should have read reviews that had same issue with me. They rlly have to make windows open. Location was great, price reasonable, wifi good, room clean, no issues with lift so i gave 3 star but not gonna come back.
Finding this gem in the middle of Soho made my trip to London just that more great. The hostel is a short lift stop to the tops floors where I was greeted by friendly staff at Reception. The rooms are comfortable and have views of the London Eye. The kitchen and lounge area spotless and very sociable. I would recommend a stay here if you want to enjoy the West End and everything it offers.
Was very clean and was nice having only 4 to a room. Bathrooms and showers were clean, but a little small. All the staff were very friendly and nice to talk to. Location was amazing and is right by soho and the British Museum. The guests were more on the older side and didn’t see many younger guests.Rooms: 4/5
Great location and despite the stairs value for money with great breakfast options. I tried calling the hostel several times but nobody answered. Check in was slow and remember to bring photo ID. Would I stay again....yes! Rooms: Small but if you get a private room private. Remember to bring a towel. Nearby activities: Lots Safety: Good secure location with rigorous check in procedure. Walkability: Near everything Food & drinks: Breakfast
