Clean & affordable, this is quite the gem as hostels go. Far enough away from the hub-bub of downtown, but close enough that you can be in the thick of the city in just a matter of minutes, I would recommend this place to any solo travelers coming through the city. Whether you've been to London a hundred times or this is your very first time, Smart Hyde Park Inn & Hostel is the place to stay.
I mean you do get what you paid for… one of the cheapest hostels in London and the location is pretty nice: close to hyde park and two subway stations so rather easy to get around. The less time you spend in the hostel the better but that’s true for many hostels. As other reviews mentioned: weirdly hot even when it’s getting cooler outside. The people you share the room with really make or break the stay and we were pretty lucky with our neighbors. Bathroom was decently clean; small but private. My friend and I stayed in an all female room and I would recommend doing this as there are a lot of middle age guys who seem to live here more permanently. I wouldn’t recommend staying here alone as a woman there are always a lot of guys hanging around the entrance and lobby. Beds are small and mattresses are thin but the curtains do provide some nice privacy. Lockers are a bit obnoxious as they are very loud and I would recommend you bring your own lock. Overall, I wouldn’t necessarily stay here again but it did work nicely for a cheap trip to London with a friend. Oh and I do want to add that the girl working the front desk was super nice and helpful!! She really helped make us feel welcomed. Wifi is also quick.
In general, my stay was okay. The staff was friendly and helpful, but the room wasn’t excellent. It was really hot I couldn’t sleep for most of the night. The bed was not really comfortable. There weren’t enough toilets in the building. But for the price I paid which was £13 pounds the accommodation seemed reasonable. Won’t recommend staying for more than 1 night.
There are several reasons as to why one should avoid this hostel when visiting London. Firstly, the building although pretty does not have the necessary capacity for the number of dormitories they have tried to fit inside it. In addition to that, the rooms were packed with beds that did not leave enough room for air to guests. Another major issue with this establishment is that the atmosphere was extremely hot and unhealthy due to the poor ventilation facilities. May I note that we have stayed in multiple hostels before, in rooms up to 24 people comparing to the 15 of this room and never before have we experienced such horrid and uncomfortable conditions. Honestly we wonder how this establishment is considered in line with the hygiene standards of the British law. Are there any standards? As trevelrs, we tend not to ask for much and spend mostly sleeping time in our rooms. Here nevertheless, sleeping was a tiring experience. But above all, what really bothered us was the hostel's policy to allow long term stay to guests. Of course we respect this choice on the part of the management. However one should keep that in mind when booking their stay as these people tend to be over-comfortable in the room, not respecting the rest of the guests, turning the lights on late at night, being super noisy, spraying heavy deodorants in the tiny space, etc. Consequently, we couldn't even make use of the surprisingly fully equipped kitchen, as these guests with their ambiguous behavior made us feel uncomfortable. Eventually we had to leave earlier after enduring 3 of our 5 planned night-stays and book a two-bed room at a hotel, that included its own bathroom and breakfast, with just +5£ a night for each.
Good hostel and really good location. As all hostel, your stay will be rated by other people that share the room with you. Me and my boyfriend shared the room with more 4 people and they respect all rules. Breakfast for 4,5 pounds. Good option because you can eat as much as you want.
Stayed one night in a 6 people shared room. It had it's own private bathroom with toilet and shower. Clean and comfortable over all, very warm and very well ventilated. You couldn't ask for more, and keep in mind the location. Hyde Park, tube station and a public library opened until 20:00 within a max 10 minutes walk !
Receptionists were nice and check it was easy. However, the kitchen is closed from 7am to 10am every morning forcing you to buy their breakfast which is just toast and cereal. There is no scrubbing brush to clean dishes, so dishes were always dirty. The showers were cold and dirty. The storage lockers were loud and you can't open them without waking others. Wouldn't recommend unless desperate.
I was worried by all the bad reviews for this hostel. I assure you, it's really not that bad. I do not recommend if you are overweight or tall because it is true that the beds are not very big, I am a normal size and it was ok. In addition, I had the middle bed, but making his bed when you were on top did not seem easy and I found it a bit disgusting the beds that were on the floor. Getting my suitcase up to the top floor was very difficult, but that's normal. I have rarely seen hostels with elevators. Yes it was hot in the room compared to the temperatures outside, but there was a very powerful fan and I prefer it to be warmer than too cold. It was very bearable as temperature All my interactions with the receptions were very friendly. When I arrived, the girl who greeted me noticed my accent and gave me my explanations in French. The bathroom in the room was cleaned daily. I liked the concept that it is all plastic, so no mold. The communal showers are bigger & better and were very clean. I didn't use the kitchen, but it looked great. Wifi was very strong & fast in all hostels. I was in a room of 6 and I was entitled to very respectful roommates. The big minus came from the family with young children in the next room. They were very loud and you could hear everything, but it only lasted 1-2 hours. The hostel is about 1 hour walk from all the historical places, it was very good because 90% of the walk was in very beautiful parks. In addition, a metro station is a two-minute walk from the hostel. There are many affordable restaurants very close.
The hostel is very well located but it has many disadvantages. To begin with, the rooms are very uncomfortable, we were in a room for 6 people and there was almost no space. The beds are uncomfortable and there are people who do not put their sheets, therefore the mattress is dirty when another arrives. The bathroom in the room was quite dirty and had a very bad smell. On the other hand, the bathrooms outside the room were uncomfortable, with no space to get dressed there were no changing rooms, and the showers were quite dirty and waterlogged. I would not recommend this hostel at all, just because of the location, because the friendliness of the cleaning staff was also a negative.
The first night upon arrival I was woken up by some itching sensation on my hands and arms. When switching the light on, I saw a small bug on my top. Which was immediately obvious to me it was a bed bug, given also the itchy bites on my arms! Shocked, I run down to the reception and reported it to the Night Shift, showing him the bites. The guy was friendly and gave me immediately another room! Telling me to speak to his manager in the morning. Tired from traveling from Germany during the day and knowing I had to work the next day, I had no choice but to pack up my suitcase at 2am at night and move the rooms. When returned to the room to pack up, I saw an even bigger bed bug like a cockroach on the sheets! It was terrifying and disgusting at the same time. I filmed the bug, for evidence to show. In the morning I confronted the manager! He didn’t even bother to apologize! He kept asking me questions and turning my sentences around, questioning the truth of my experience, making it sound like I was the one to blame. He called his male assistant to inspect the bed! This assistant was as rude as the manager, questioning even the evidence Video, he immediately said my choice is to leave the hostel! Indirectly threatening me to be thrown out! The two were super intimidating, telling that there were no bed bugs complains before. Eventhough another member of staff mentioned some cases before! I felt very unsafe in their presence, being a female, traveling alone! Their ruined my day and I felt very uncomfortable during the entire stay, but I had no choice or time to search for another place to stay as I was there just for few days for work! Their behavior may be also the result of their cultural upbringing, which seems to be some religious patriarchy, with no respect for a woman! Their behavior should be paid attention to! It is a disgrace!
