Absolute gem of a place! Our youngest had previously been here on a residential trip with his school and really wanted us to go too. So on his recommendation we booked. We really weren't disappointed. Yes, the rooms are basic, but it's a Youth Hostel. They were clean though and the facilities in the hostel, like the cafe, living rooms etc are great too. It's right next to the Abbey and is in a great location for getting to the town centre.nMy only gripe would be that we had paid for tickets to the Abbey in advance of our visit, and once we checked in at the hostel we were told that tickets to the attraction were included in the price of our stay! Therefore, I think people should be made aware on booking or advertised as such on their website to save people wasting money on purchasing unrequited tickets.
The view and location of this place is great! The staff were also really helpful and nice. However the rooms had quite dirty carpets and smelt like urine. Could use some improvement.
Booking error caused by their website which I didn't spot meant I had the wrong dates - not to worry, they had other dates that suited and were vacant. Nope - met with the absolute brick wall that is the total lack of customer service relating to a booking which was intended to be eight weeks from now. Now going through the Section 75 process to reclaim via my credit card as clearly they have no interest in providing any sort of customer service.
I didn't stay and only stopped for lunch but we had a decent meal at a reasonable price.nnFood was fresh and hot and served quickly, overall the venue is very present.nnWe all enjoyed our food and the cost was small considering 4 adults all had a hot meal.
A bit of Nostalgia for this weekend. In 1976 at the tender age of 16 my mate Paul and me had a holiday cycling from Halifax to the West coast of Whitby across to the East coast Cumbria and back - in all 6 days and 5 nights in YHA hostels. One of which was Whitby YHA so as part of this month's Festival of Walking I decided to drive up to Whitby and do the circular hike from Whitby YHA down to Robin Hoods Bay and back in all 14.5 miles and stay at the YHA for the first time since that time long ago!
