The Gateshead Millennium Bridge holds a special place in our community's heart. Each time I cross over it, I get to take pictures, sometimes with my kids while enjoying the beautiful view of the river or talking with the friendly locals. With wide pathways, this makes it perfect for pedestrians and cyclists alike. But this bridge is not only an architectural wonder; it connects a rich past of Gateshead with its vibrant present by reflecting the deep sense of local pride. The world's first tilting bridge, it is an absolute innovation. Queen Elizabeth II opened it on 7 May 2002 during her Golden Jubilee tour, and since that time, it has turned out to be a much-loved landmark. As the Queen herself said: “Today I see the tangible signs of the determination of all those within this region to create a new future”. Indeed, these words reflect the spirit carried across by the bridge. The Gateshead Millennium Bridge is not just a tourist attraction; it has become a sign of how Gateshead and the wider North East are resilient yet face up to the future.
If you’re in the area definitely visit the Tyne Bridge. Apparently it was a model for the famous bridges in Sydney, Australia. There are some really nice alleys where you have a magnificent view of the bridge. Have a stroll around the area as it is quite busy and has many great pubs.
Great engineering at its best. Great views from here overlooking the Swing Bridge and High Level Bridge as well as a great view of parts of the city. Bridge can be noisy as used by all types of vehicles. Wide pavements however if you have children with you, they must not be out of your sight due to the constant vehicular traffic.
There was work being done on the bridge when we visited but still great to walk across and see the city from up high. No fee to go onto the bridge.
The Tyne Bridge was designed by Mott, Hay and Anderson, comparable to their Sydney Harbour Bridge version. These bridges derived their design from the Hell Gate Bridge in New York City. The Dorman Long team was also notable for including Dorothy Buchanan, the first female member of the Institution of Civil Engineers, joining in 1927 in addition to her contribution to the Tyne Bridge, she served as part of the team for the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Lambeth Bridge in London. The bridge was completed on 25 February 1928, and officially opened on 10 October that year by King George V and Queen Mary, who were the first to use the roadway, travelling in their Ascot Landau. A great piece of engineering, It is ranked as the tenth tallest structure in Newcastle at the moment.
Friends visiting from Türkiye, and wanted to visit Scotland so we drove from Essex to Newcastle as a stopover. The views and the places visited was very good. Very lively, very friendly people and beautiful places to visit.
Many times i find it difficult to find a general category to let people view my Photos. These photos are of the River Tyne Newcastle and its magnificent bridges. My friend and I spent a week there and we found the river area particularly to be fascinating. Pubs and restaurants line the river walks a d at night it all comes alive in a blaze of light. The castle is interesting also. We didn't tour inside. The people are exactly what we expected, as friendly and as helpful as us scots. A great city to explore with its wonderful metro system making it so easy to get around.
Amazing place to visit. Loved the vibe and great place to explore with lots of restaurants around with great view of the beautiful bridge.
A must see amazing structure. This iconic structure that is famous for the Great North Run, is the centrepiece and is something that if you say Newcastle it’s a possibility you say it first. From every vantage point this bridge shows of the city I’ve taken hundreds of pictures to say the least. So in summary this bridge passes the Tyne of your stay in Newcastle.
Amazing feat of engineering by Stephenson , initially spanning over pre-existing buildings . I somehow doubt you would get planning permission for this today because of this , but extraordinary to look at
