Standing at the base of Nelson's Column and looking up at the majestic bronze lions is an experience that never gets old. The fountains were beautiful as always, casting a refreshing mist in the air while people gathered from all over the world.nDuring my visit, I was struck by how the square perfectly connects the past with the present. On one side you have the grand National Gallery, and on the other, views leading down towards Whitehall and Big Ben. It is a place where so many of my fondest memories are anchored. Even in a city as fast-paced and bustling as London, I have always managed to find a sense of profound peace and calm right here.nA Scenic Journey: Victoria Station to Trafalgar SquarenWhen we arrived from Edinburgh, we decided to skip the transit and walk all the way from Victoria Bus Station to Trafalgar Square.nThe Route: It is a highly pleasant, scenic walk that takes roughly 30 to 35 minutes.nThe Sights: Along the way, we had the pleasure of walking right past Buckingham Palace! While we didn’t stop or stay there this time, just passing by added a wonderful, iconic touch to our journey.nA Spectacular Surprise: The Odyssey Horse StatuenAs we stepped into the square, we were immediately greeted by an incredible, towering bronze horse statue. At first glance, I honestly thought it was the famous Trojan Horse!nHowever, as we walked closer, we discovered it was actually a spectacular promotional installation for Christopher Nolan's film, The Odyssey starring Matt Damon!. Seeing this magnificent artwork set against the historic backdrop of the National Gallery and Nelson's Column was unforgettable. We sat by the fountains, took in the sights, and fully enjoyed a quiet, peaceful moment before diving back into the energy of the busy city.nGetting There: Excellent Public Transport LinksnIf you would prefer not to do the 30-minute walk, getting to Trafalgar Square is incredibly easy as it is one of the most well-connected hubs in London:nNearest Tube Stations:nCharing Cross Station Bakerloo & Northern lines – The absolute closest station, with exits leading directly out onto the square.nLeicester Square Station Northern & Piccadilly lines – A very short, easy 3-minute walk away.nEmbankment Station District, Circle, Northern & Bakerloo lines – Just a scenic 5-to-10-minute walk up from the river.nBy Bus: There are countless bus routes stopping directly at the square including routes 3, 6, 9, 11, 12, 15, 24, 87, 88, 139, and 453, making it highly accessible from any corner of London.nPractical VerdictnWhether you are visiting to marvel at Nelson's Column, take photos with the iconic bronze lions, admire unique temporary art installations like The Odyssey horse, or simply sit by the fountains to find a moment of peace, Trafalgar Square is a timeless masterpiece. Brilliant experience on the hottest day in London in years. Grandchildren loved it, and Conor and his team made sure that we were well fed and watered, and informed about London highlights as we toured round London. Definitely recommend this trip.
