We love it around here, any time of year : It's one of our favourite places in London. The Tower is steeped in history, there are beautiful buildings all around, plenty of eateries/coffee shops, souvenir shops etc, the river to walk along, Tower Bridge, St Katherine's Dock. It has something for everyone :
loved walking around the ramparts and turrets, in this active military base. The guard the largest diamond in the world and you get to see it. lots of guns, ammo, and soldiers to see that you don't try to steal it. Beefeater was very informative and entertaining. Lots of cool stuff to see, you will need all day to see it so get there early.
Located on the banks of the River Thames, it is a historic fortress deeply connected to England's rich history. The site has been of strategic importance since Roman times, serving as a defensive stronghold long before the current structure was built. Over the centuries, it has fulfilled various roles, including a medieval fortress, royal palace, prison, and treasury. The Tower was originally constructed in 1078 by William the Conqueror after his conquest of England in 1066, to consolidate his power. The heart of the fortress, the White Tower, was built in the distinctive Norman architectural style, and remains well-preserved to this day. Over time, successive monarchs expanded and reinforced the fortress, using it as both a stronghold and a royal residence during the medieval and Tudor periods. The Tower also served as a prison for high-profile individuals, with notable figures such as Anne Boleyn being executed within its walls. The Jewel House, which houses the royal collection of crown jewels, is the only area where photography is strictly prohibited. The White Tower now serves as a museum, displaying an impressive collection of medieval weapons and armor. According to legend, the kingdom will fall if the ravens of the Tower ever leave, which is why they continue to be kept there to this day. Despite its historical significance and iconic status, some visitors find the admission price to be quite high, which can be seen as a drawback.
This was my 3rd visit to the Tower so not as many pictures as previous visits. It was stunning to visit in January because it was very quiet and we were able to take our time without the crowds. It was frosty but sunny so it was great to see the views from the battlements
We did the guided tour with a Beefeater. It was so worth it! Even as a lover of history with a background in British history, it was amazing! Our guide was engaging, knowledgeable and funny. To me, this was a bucket list item, and I adored every minute of my visit.
